Arsene Wenger confirms new deal for defender

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is currently in talks with the board about extending the contract of centre-back Per Mertesacker after the German international has become crucial to the side’s back-line.

When he first arrived in England, many people criticised and judged Mertesacker after several errors cost The Gunners dearly, but it seems that the tall, commanding centre-back just needed time to settle because now he is one of the top defenders in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has developed a strong partnership with Laurent Koscielny and together they have helped strengthen Arsenal’s weak-link, their defence.

Frequently captaining the side when Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta have been out, Mertesacker has become crucial to Wenger and today he revealed the news that a new deal is in the pipeline.

‘We are in the process of extending Per Mertesacker’s contract,’ he said at this morning’s press conference.

Michael Carrick signs new deal

0

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a contract extension at the club which will see him stay at Old Trafford until 2015, with an additional year available at the end of the deal.

The 32-year-old has become one of United’s most influential players in the centre of the park and was one of the main reasons behind their 20th title win last year.

Currently recovering from an ankle injury, Carrick will miss the next month or so, however he has admitted he is delighted to have signed a new deal at the club he loves.

“The club has gone through a few changes and working under David Moyes has been fantastic,” said the former West Ham United player.

“I have won many trophies in my years playing here and I am looking forward to achieving more in the future.”

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Carrick has won five Premier League titles, one Champions League, one League Cup and one Fifa Club World Cup.

His manager, David Moyes, also expressed his delight at the new deal.

“He is an exceptional man and a true professional,” Moyes said.

“I am delighted Michael has extended his contract.

“During my short time at the club it hasn’t been hard to notice that Michael is a great reader of the game and has excellent passing ability.”

Chelsea step-up interest in Radamel Falcao

0

Premier League outfit Chelsea are ready to step-up their interest in AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, but they will face some serious competition from Jose Mourinho’s old-side Real Madrid.

The two European giants are desperate to land the Columbian after he has worked his way up to being one of the best strikers in world football, but both clubs will know that he won’t come cheaply.

Since making his massive move from Atletico Madrid, Falcao has been watched and scouted by Mourinho’s team and reports in France are suggesting that they may make a formal bid in January, instead of holding off until the Summer.

However, there are also reports suggesting that Cristiano Ronalo has made a plea to Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign the 27-year-old.

Now a lot of people would imagine that Monaco are not going to listen to any offers for their star-man, but there are three important factors in this deal that could help.

First of all, the French side are willing to listen to offers due to the UEFA Financial Fair Play rule which will be coming into action soon, so they may try and get high-earners off their wage-bill.

The next two points could help Chelsea in their hunt for Falcao as Monaco’s owner Dmitry Rybolovlev has a very stron relationship with fellow Russian billionaire and Blues owner Roman Abramovich.

Another factor that could bring Falcao to Stamford Bridge is the fact that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is also Jose Mourinho’s agent.

Could Falcao finally be on his way to the Premier League?

West Ham United interested in former-Red Devil

0

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce is planning on making a formal transfer bid for former-Manchester United striker Diego Forlan as he tries to sort out his options up front.

The Hammers are seriously lacking a recognised striker since Andy Carroll picked up a serious injury, and in recent weeks, the London-based club have been deploying a 4-6-0 formation due to the lack of threat up front.

With the January transfer market just around the corner, Allardyce is desperate to start putting together a plan of action and his attentions have turned to Internacional striker, Forlan, who has a wealth of experience world football, despite his unsuccessful stint at Old Trafford.

However, despite bad memories of England, the 34-year-old could be tempted to make one last move in his career and Upton Park could be his final destination.

Brendan Rodgers tells target to stay at current club!

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has advised Will Hughes to remain a Derby County player, despite The Reds being interested in the 20-year-old.

Reports suggested this week that Rodgers and co. had won the race to sign the highly-rated youngster, who was also monitored by Arsenal, but in his press conference ahead of the Merseyside derby, he has dismissed all reports about a bid being made and accepted.

“I read we had put in a bid or something had been agreed but there has been nothing,” said the Liverpool boss.

“I think he is a wonderful young talent who just needs to play football and for me he is probably at the best place he could be.”

He added: “I don’t normally comment on speculation but [I will] because I have the interest of the player at heart.”

“This is a very talented young player that either a person or a group of people aren’t doing him any favours whatsoever by constantly linking him with coming to Liverpool,”.

“This is a young kid learning the game – he is at an outstanding club at Derby, he has a great manager there and we sent one of our young players [Andre Wisdom] there to develop and learn.”

Sturridge may be injured

0

Daniel Sturridge was hurt during the game against Germany and playeed through the pain and may not be able to play the merseyside derby this weekend. Sturridge is doubtful for the upcoming league game for Liverpool as he played 90 minutes for England midweek and he also had a thigh problem. He actually left early in training the day before the match yet Roy Hodgson still played him for the friendly and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is worried at the affect this will have on him and the Reds upcoming game.

The England international admitted that it was his desicion to play the full 90 minutes. The Liverpool manager beleives that the on form striker plays best when he trains regularly yet due to the small amount of training with the international team he feels that this may affect Sturridge. His team-mate and captain Steven Gerrard is also a doubt for the upcoming match with a hip problem. Although both Sturridge & Gerrard are doubtful one man who is certainly not playing is Jose Enrique with a knee injury.

Enrique will soon be undergoing surgery for his knee.

Ashley Cole Injured

0

Ashley Cole will be unavailable for the West Ham game this weekend for Chelsea as he aggrevated an existing Rib problem to play for England against Germany. Cole first encountered this problem during the blues win over Norwich and it then caused him to miss 2 international games as he was out for 3 weeks. His form has taken a knock since this rib injury.

He received criticism from Jose Mourinho after his performance against Newcastle. He was benched for the Champions League match against Shalke and the league game against West Brom and Cesar Azpilicueta took his place. The england international was surprised to be selected for the 1-0 loss against Germany on Tuesday. The 32 year old was complaining of discomfort at the half-time break and was substituted 8 minutes into the second half for Kieran Gibbs.

The defender will be assessed by club medics and will be unlikely available for selection. He will probably be unavailable for the league game this weekend however he can play the Champions league game midweek but Mourinho may rest him for his benefit. Azpilicueta has performed very well in the games he has played during Cole’s injury.

Theo Walcott is back

0

Theo Walcott is back from injury and ready to face his old club Southampton. It has been confirmed that he will be available for this weekends game. Walcott has returned after 2 months out injured after having minor abdominal surgery. Arsene Wenger hopes that the striker will make all the difference in recovering from their 1-0 loss to Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger said: “Theo will be back for saturday in the squad. He’s completely fit again. He has not played for a long time, of course, he has not played even a reserve team game, but I will put him in the squad on saturday.”

“Ofcourse you miss a player like Theo Walcott. Strikers who get behind the defenders have a very important quality and Theo has that quality. Theo had a good start to the season, he scored goals, he provided chances and had assists. He can always give you a different option in the game and that is of course vital.”

Wenger hopes that the England international can provide added support to Olivier Giroud & Mesut Ozil.

“You always want to have a perfect balance (in attack), and if you look at our results our balance was not too bad, but Theo has different qualitites to other players and I am very pleased that he’s back.

Tomas Rosicky will be available in the match against Southampton following a sickness bug however Lukas Podolski is still unavailable however will be available soon.

On Podolski, Wenger said: “He is doing fitness training on the pitch and starts to do some ball work too, he still needs two or three weeks before we see him on the pitch for Arsenal.”

“Arsenal Can Win The Title” Pochettino

0

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has been impressed by Arsenal this season and believes the Barclays Premier League leaders can sustain their title challenge.

Arsene Wenger’s side look like they could soon end their well-documented trophy drought after an impressive start that leaves them top of the domestic table as well as their Champions League group.

Despite their fine start, however, questions remain over the strength in depth of Arsenal’s squad in addition to their ability to compete against other top teams.

Their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last time out highlighted those perceived weaknesses, which will be tested again this weekend in an unlikely first versus third clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Southampton could usurp the Gunners as league leaders should results go their way on Saturday, although former Argentina international Pochettino is well aware of the threat the north Londoners pose.

“I would say that the team that we’re going to play against on Saturday is the one that’s playing the best football in the league,” he said.

“I think they can win the league, but I also think that there’s other teams that are going to be in the running to win the league.

“I think it’s going to be a hard-fought competition throughout until the end of the season. It’s going to be very competitive and I think it’s going to be a very exciting end to the season.”

Arsenal’s hopes of a first league title since the invincible 2003/04 season are undoubtedly boosted by the creative attacking options at their disposal.

Pochettino knows two of those well from his time in the Primera Division with Espanyol, and warned his players to keep close tabs on Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.

“I rate Mesut Ozil as one of the top 10 players in the world,” he said of the former Real Madrid playmaker.

“It is clear they are two great football players. It is clear that you cannot afford to grant them any space or time to think because they are players with individual actions can decide a game on their own.

“They are amazing talents as we saw in La Liga and now as we see in the Premier League, so we have to be really careful with the two of them.”

Gotze Not Fazed By Former Club

0

Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze has said he has no fear of returning to his former club Borussia Dortmund for Saturday’s Bundesliga showdown, but expects a negative reaction from home fans.

The 21-year-old actioned a buy-out clause in his contract, announcing in April that he would Join Bayern Munich for 37 million euros (US$50m) for this season and Saturday will be his first return to Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion in the Bayern shirt.

“I am not scared of going back there,” Gotze told magazine Sport Bild.

“However, I understand the fans who would rather see me in the Dortmund shirt.

“For me, it is just confirmation of what I achieved with the club.

“We have won titles together and even reached the Champions League final.

“When I now come back, I have to accept that not every reaction in the stadium will be positive, but that’s part of football.

“I grew up in Dortmund, when to school there and took my first steps in football, playing many games for Borussia.

“There are positive memories, Dortmund is a big part of my past and I am looking forward to going back.”

Bayern travel to Dortmund four-points clear in the league, while hosts Borussia have been decimated by injuries with their entire back four on the walking wounded list.

Bayern’s France star Franck Ribery, who is out of the game with a fractured rib, has said Saturday’s match will be “decisive in the title race”, but Gotze says it is too early in the season to make such statements.

“It will be a big step (in deciding the title), but I wouldn’t call it ‘decisive’, there’s a lot that can still happen in the second part of the season,” said Gotze.

Having set a new Bundesliga record of 37 games without defeat, Bayern can extend it to 38 against Dortmund, who last lost to Munich in the league back in February 2010 and are unbeaten in their last six league games against the Bavarians.

Dortmund beat Bayern 4-2 in July’s German Super Cup final, avenging their 2-1 Champions League final defeat in May.

Newcastle target another Ligue 1 transfer

0

Newcastle are set to make yet another Ligue 1 swoop as they eye Bordeaux striker Cheick Diabate according to ‘The Metro’. Manager Alan Pardew is set to enter the January transfer market and put right some of the summer deals that didn’t quite go through.

The Tyne-Side club saw many targets fall just out of their reach as the deadline approached, leaving them with just the one signing, Loic Remy on loan from Queen’s Park Rangers. Pardew is keen to sign another striker to bolster their attacking strength and is thought to have had an eye on Cheick Diabate due to his eye for goal and strong attacking presence.

it is thought that the Malian will be avaliable to the Toons for around ÂŁ5m and that he would be very keen to join the Premier League. Diabate has also been linked with London clubs West ham and Arsenal, which could see a potential bidding war for the heavily sought after Bordeaux striker. And with 6 goals already this season, it would be no surprise to see Newcastle add yet another Ligue 1 player to their squad, already full of French talent.

Hamann expects City to challenge for title.

0

Former Manchester City centre midfielder Dietmar Hamann still believes that City can still possibly win the Barclays Premier League, despite falling behined in the tight title race, after a poor start to the season under new City manager Manual Pellegrini.

The Citizens spent big on transfers this summer, after bringing in Fernandinho, from Ukranian giants Shaktar Donesk, Alvaro Negrado, from Spanish side Seville, Jesus Navas, also from Seville, defender Martin Demichelis signed from Malaga, and striker Stevan Jovetic signed from Serie A side Fiorentina, as Pellegrini looks to assert his own stamp on the squad.

Four defeats in six away games has seen some pundits and media outlets revise the pre season prediction after City have slumped to eigth in the League, after notable defeats at newly promoted Cardiff City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Sunderland respectively.

These defeat’s, coupled with the continued absence of captain Vincent Kompany, and well docummented mistakes from regular first choice keeper Joe Hart, has left a bad taste in the mouth of all at City, and this is despite a 4-1 demolition of rivals Manchester United, in the derby game.

Hamann was quoted in an interview given to Sky Sports News…..

“They have to keep their home form and they have to start winning away games,”

“It has been very disappointing to watch them in games that you did not expect them to struggle in.

“Probably at Aston Villa, they were a little hard done by by the referee. They were well on top in the first half and probably should have won the game but I don’t think there were too many complaints at the end.

“But at Sunderland and Cardiff, they also lost and they have been beaten four times away from home this year. You would think they can probably only afford to lose two, maybe three, more if they want to win the league.

“For me, they are still the most likely Premier League champions, but they have to start improving their away form. If they don’t do that, once you get six points behind the team at the top – and the way Arsenal is going now – it could be very hard to claw them back.”

Pellegrini has come under some critisism by Manchester City supporters for his use of tactics in recent week’s, and with reports linking Sergio Aguero with a move, the side must improve.

City’s opponants on Sunday afternoon are North London side Tottenham Hotspur, and Hamann believes Spurs can still challenge for a top four spot.

As for Spurs, they do not score enough goals,” Hamann added. “I still think they have every chance of finishing in the top four because they have a very talented squad.

“If you look at their bench, it is better than most other teams apart from maybe Manchester City. They have a host of players there that are top international players.

“If they were to get beat at City on Sunday – which I think they will do – they get further and further behind and you just wonder, once you are six or seven points behind the top-four spots, it is not that easy to make up.”

Chris Hughton has faith in Rickie Van Wolfswinkel

0

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has given his backing to struggling striker Rickie Van Wolfswinkel and the Canaries boss is adamant that he can keep them in the Premier League.

Since making his ÂŁ8.5million move to England from Portugal, Wolfswinkel has only scored one goal and that came on the opening day of the season during the side’s 2-2 draw with Everton.

After that game, the Dutchman has failed to make any impact whatsoever and is now sidelined with a toe injury.

Despite the lack of goals and the lack of quality-shown, Hughton still believes the striker will come good at Carrow Road.

“It is a small muscular problem in his toe and the difficulty we have had is it is one of those which has taken a little bit longer to heal,” said Hughton, who revealed goalkeeper Mark Bunn was set for a spell on the sidelines after a minor ankle operation.

“The very good news is it is not a serious injury, but he needs a bit of time to rest it, probably for a maximum of two weeks, and make sure he is 100 per cent, and he will be.

“We brought a few players in during the summer and some adapt quicker than others.

“When you have signed someone as a record signing, there is always that hype and expectation that comes with it.

“Some hit the ground running and the goals go flying in, others the contribution is good and it takes a bit longer.

“One thing I cannot fault Ricky on is what he has given the team in his work ethic, what he has not got is the goals he would have liked, but his contribution to the team has been very good.

“Sometimes that happens – if you look at the Premier League, there are also some other big name strikers who have come in and have not got the goals they would have liked either.

“Rickie is a confident lad and that comes from someone who is used to scoring goals.

“He took a little time to settle in when he moved to Portugal, so I have no worries about him.”

Mario Balotelli dismisses transfer talks

0

AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from the San Siro.

Recent speculation had linked the Italian with a move away from the club due to feeling unsettled, but he has quickly moved to rubbish those reports and has insisted that he is happy with life in Milan.

Balotelli, who joined Milan from Premier League side Manchester City back in January, admitted that he doesn’t think about his future at all and he only worries about the next match.

“I have always said that I do not watch out for the distant future,” Balotelli told Sky Italia.

“I am thinking about doing well against Genoa [at the weekend] and not about the market in either January or May. I am happy at Milan and I am happy to be here.”

“I’m a good lad,” added Balotelli. “I’m as normal as anybody, just I’m in a situation where being normal is not permitted.

“You’ve got to be a man, you’ve got to be big and you are not allowed to get distracted in my surroundings. People are watching me, but I’m not bothered by it. I have a good character so I’m relaxed. I’m no longer like I was when I was younger.”

Kieran Gibbs hails Arsenal’s defensive improvement

0

Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs believes their defensive improvement is down to the fact that they like to press-down their opposition high up the pitch, rather than letting them run at the back-line.

The Gunners have always been criticised for their defensive displays and over the past few seasons a lot of the defenders have received stick at some point.

However, 2013 seems to have changed and Arsenal now seem to have one of the best defences in England as so far this season they have only conceded five goals from open play.

An incredible ending to last season was also aided by the partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, but Gibbs believe it’s the fact they close down the opposition quicker now.

“I feel like we have been [tight] for a while,” he told Arsenal Player. “Last season – especially towards the back end of it – we showed a good understanding together and that is just improving now.

“It certainly feels – not just as a back four but the whole team – when we press from the front and defend more as a team, we don’t look like we are going to concede. That is a positive that we want to keep going.

“We are obviously doing a lot of work on the training field. We have coaches who are on top of us a lot and informing us about opponents; what to be careful of, when we can afford to take risks – there is a lot of analysis that helps us improve.

“But I think our consistency is just down to playing a lot of games. The more you play with each other, the better understanding you naturally get.”
