EVERTON AND TOTTENHAM REACTION

0

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t be separated today during their Premier League encounter as they played out a bore 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.

The two main talking points will be the penalty appeals that were turned down for each side, but after the game, both manager’s found positives from the match.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas: “It was very tight, a good game, we had good moments and a great first half with pressing and good attacking combinations and we should have gone ahead in the first half. The second half evened itself out and in the last 30 minutes they had a go at us.

“We still managed to slot in a couple of situations in the second half. The result is fair and with a bit more luck we could have gone ahead in the first half. Good point in the end. We could have gone second but, considering Everton’s aspirations, it was important to get a point.”

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas speaking to BBC Sport about Hugo Lloris’ head knock: “Hugo still doesn’t remember the incident with Lukaku so he lost consciousness there but he seemed assertive and determined to continue and showed great character and personality. We decided to keep him on based on that.

“You see the player is focused and driven. It was a big knock but he looked composed and ready to continue on. The call always belongs to me. Brad [Friedel] was ready to come in but the person Hugo his there were enough signs for him to continue.”

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen: “Hugo Lloris had contact with Romelu Lukaku, but Hugo is a strong man. The doctor thinks it was better to take him off but he is a guy who thought he could help the team by staying on to give us an extra substitution.

“I think there was contact for my penalty appeal, that was why he didn’t give me a yellow card but it would have been harsh for Everton. I think there was a similar one in the second half, with Seamus Coleman being brought down. I think it was also Seamus in the first half so at the end we can shake hands.”

“If you see second half it was a good point because Everton were very strong.”

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: “In any season you want to be in a strong position in the final third of the season.”

“We have been very pleased with the start of the season and the way the squad is shaping up, now it is a matter of getting through the middle third of the campaign and seeing where that takes us.

“It is in our DNA to win trophies and leagues, and we need to use that to our advantage.

“You always work towards that. How long is it going to take? It could be a season, but remember that there is a huge difference between us and the group of teams working at a certain financial level.

“But I always believe in football it is not always about finances. You just need the time to bridge that gap you have.

“We are not financially fighting with the clubs who are spending to win the league or get into the Champions League but I believe with the characters we have at the club we can challenge that but it will take time to bridge the gap.”

Brendan Rodgers not happy with referee

0

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes Martin Atkinson made a mistake when he disallowed Jordan Henderson’s goal during their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last night.

Goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey extended The Gunners’ lead at the top of the Premier League to five points, but Rodgers feels Liverpool’s equaliser should have stood.

Atkinson gave a free-kick to Liverpool after Bacary Sagna brought down Luis Suarez and after the striker got up quickly to put through his team-mate, the ball eventually found its way to Henderson who tapped home into an empty net.

However, Atkinson brought the play back so that the free-kick could be re-taken, a decision that Rodgers didn’t agree with.

Rodgers said: “That was a poor decision. I think you’ve got to let the game flow. If that’s the ruling, then it’s not a ruling that is very good.

“We’re always asking players to be honest and get up and play, not roll about on the floor, and if they are going to be discouraged from doing that then they might stay and roll about, try to get someone a yellow card.

“I got an explanation from the fourth official on it, and it is disappointing, to be honest.

“He said it was the next phase of the game, so he was given a yellow card, and it could only have been given at that point.

“I thought it was a poor decision because you have to let the game flow, but that was the reason he gave it. It was clever play (from us), and we got a goal from it.”

Martin Jol doesn’t fear the sack

0

Fulham manager Martin Jol has stated that he does not fear for his own future at Fulham after watching his side slump to a third defeat in a week against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon , a result which piles even more pressure on the former Tottenham manager.

Jol reception after the game was that of a sour one , with supporters of the club calling for his head after some uninspiring performances , culminating in the defeat against the champions , which leaves the West London side flirting with the relegation zone, despite having players such as Dimitar Berbetov in their current squad in what has been a frustrating start to life under new American chairman Shahid Khan , who took over the club from outgoing chairman Mohammad Al Fayed in the summer.

The cottegers were 3-0 down after just 22 minutes as Jol’s fellow Dutchman Robin Van Persie tore through Fulham’s vunerable defence. Jol then stated to the media aftyer the game and was quited saying.

Sometimes I worry if the supporters are at my back, but it is better they are on my back than the players’ back.”

Fulham have struggled at Craven Cottage this season, winning just one of their five Premier League games , and dissapointing defeats against Cardiff City and neighbours Arsenal , and a poor draw against West Bromwich Abion but they slipped only one place – to 15th – after this latest defeat….

“They are entitled to [boo]. I will take the blame. I’m responsible and I’m a proud man so I want us to do better and the players know that and that is why they came back in the second half.

“I can’t say that I’m used to [boos] because I’ve been at a few clubs where they were probably chanting my name.

“I can’t keep coming up with excuses but I still feel if you look at the teams that are around in the bottom half, it’s not easy – we are not Real Madrid.”

Manchester United boss David Moyes saw his team pick up their fifth win in six games and said he was seeing signs of recovery after a poor start to the season, although he did not rule out making signings in the January transfer window…. the Fulham boss added later on as the pressure has grown on the stubbern Dutchman in the last few years after the sale of Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele last summer.

The home side have also failed to live up to expectarions by supporters after bringing in high profile signings such as Darren Bent and goalkeeper Stekelenburg from Ajax in the summer…..

Jose Mourinho angry and worried after Toon defeat

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted to feeling angry and worried after he watched his side lost 2-0 at St James Park due to two second-half strikes from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy.

Despite controlling most of the game, The Blues failed to make the most of their chances and were punished late on as some slack defending saw them concede twice in the last 20-minutes.

It’s a defeat that has left Chelsea five points behind league leaders Arsenal and Mourinho has admitted that he is worried about the shock defeat.

“I’m angry because I don’t understand [why we lost],” said manager Mourinho.

“I was expecting to lose my next game when the opponent was fantastic or when we were very unlucky – a match where we fought to our limits and couldn’t get the result.”

“Of course I am worried, and I read in previous years it happened the same,” the Portuguese said.

“[Chelsea] were successful in cup competitions but not successful in the Premier League.

“They qualified for the Champions League because they won the Champions League, but they finished fifth or sixth in the league.

“Last year in December, they were not in the race for the title because they were already 20 points behind.

“This season, we have played five matches away in the Premier League – I know at difficult places to play difficult matches – but we have one victory and we have two defeats.”

Arsene Wenger happy with performance

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed his side for beating title-rivals Liverpool last night thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey.

The Gunners had come under question after losing two big games against Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, but they bounced back to show their title credentials by easing past Brendan Rodgers’ men.

They took the lead in the first-half after Cazorla pounced on his own header, which came back off the post, and smashed the ball past Simon Mignolet, much to the delight of the home fans.

It was then all wrapped up in the second period when Welshman, Aaron Ramsey, thumped home a 20-yard shot in superb style.

After the game, Wenger praised his side’s effort and he believes they proved their doubters wrong when it comes to the big matches.

“It was important to respond to convince people that we can win these big games,” said the Gunners manager.

“To win it in a convincing way is even more important.”

“Our defensive performance was outstanding.”

“We kept Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and then Philippe Coutinho quiet – and for that our defenders deserve a lot of credit.”

“It was vital to win because had we not won people would say ‘Arsenal cannot win the big games at home’. It is done in a convincing way and with good solidarity and focus.

“We have plenty of big games coming up and we have the ability to deal well with them.”

Asmir Begovic feels bad for Southampton goalkeeper

0

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has admitted that it was a cool feeling scoring a goal yesterday during his side’s 1-1 draw with Southampton, but he also admits to feeling sorry for his opposite number as it was just one of those bizarre moments in football.

The game was just 14-seconds long when the Bosnian hoofed a ball up-field, and after the Saints centre-backs let the ball bounce through to the goalkeeper, unfortunately for them, it then bounced over the head of Boruc and into the back of the net.

Despite scoring the goal, Begovic admitted that he felt bad and that is why he didn’t celebrate.

“It’s a cool feeling but it was a fortunate incident. I feel a bit bad for Boruc,” Begovic told BBC Sport.

“It is a long ball that got caught in the wind and it took a wicked bounce. It’s not nice to be on the receiving end of those things as a goalkeeper.

“It does not make a goalkeeper look good and after it I did not want to celebrate out of respect for him.”

Martino Unconcerned as Messi Goal Drought Continues

0

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino insisted that he believes Lionel Messi’s goal drought is a coincidence after the Argentine failed to net for the fourth consecutive league game in Barca’s 1-0 win over Espanyol on Friday.

It is the first time since April 2011 that Messi has gone four games without scoring in La Liga and he appeared on the fringes of the game throughout as Barca struggled to breakdown their city rivals at the Camp Nou.

“I continue to think the same about him,” Martino said after the game

“It is difficult to do an individual analysis of a player in every single game, but Leo continues to be the most important player in a team replete with important figures.

“His manner of playing still offers us a huge amount and if the team continues to win you will see the best of our best players shortly.”

Despite the victory that moves Barca, temporarily at least, four points clear of Atletico Madrid and nine ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, Messi cut a forlorn figure at the end of the match.

However, in between his goal drought in domestic competition, Messi did net in Barca’s 1-1 draw away to Milan in the Champions League and Martino used that goal as his evidence that there is no problem with the four-time World Player of the Year.

“I don’t think he is worried. It is a coincidence, in the same way that it is rare for a player to score at least a goal in every game of half a season (as Messi did last season), it is rare that he goes three or four games without scoring.

“For me it is three games because he scored in Milan. Today he assisted well, he had a chance with a header and a free-kick that went just past.

“Obviously I would be delighted if he does what he usually does and scores two or three goals every game, but when you set the bar so high and then don’t score it seems like there is a problem. For me, from what I see of him, there is no problem.”

An 11th win in 12 league games for Martino’s men was achieved thanks to a 10th clean sheet in 17 games in all competitions this season.

And whilst the Argentine admitted that offensively his side were not at their best, he is happy with the improvement they have made at the back in recent weeks.

“Without doubt, along with the end of the game against Atletico Madrid, it was the worst match at home (since Martino’s arrival).

“We needed pressure, dynamism, speed. We were finding the right players in the right areas, but we lacked the finesse and final pass.

“You could see that more in the first-half. When there are more spaces, like in the last 10 minutes, we created more chances.

“But to play 90 minutes and the opponent have just one or two chances is good. That is something we have improved on a lot since the first few weeks of the season.”

Juan Mata claims he never lost faith in Chelseaa

0

Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has claimed that he never lost faith in the club, despite being linked with a move away this Summer.

It was clear at the beginning of the season that new manager Jose Mourinho was not that impressed by the Spaniard, despite him winning the club’s player of the year award two seasons in a row.

Mourinho claimed that Mata didn’t have enough versatility to be in his starting line-up, but since then, he has used the 25-year-old more frequently.

Speaking to Football Focus on Saturday, Mata admitted that he never lost the faith in the club, despite all the rumours linking him with a move away.

“The manager doesn’t have to explain why one player is playing or not playing.

“I never lose faith, I believe in myself, I know what I can do.”
