Asmir Begovic feels bad for Southampton goalkeeper

0

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has admitted that it was a cool feeling scoring a goal yesterday during his side’s 1-1 draw with Southampton, but he also admits to feeling sorry for his opposite number as it was just one of those bizarre moments in football.

The game was just 14-seconds long when the Bosnian hoofed a ball up-field, and after the Saints centre-backs let the ball bounce through to the goalkeeper, unfortunately for them, it then bounced over the head of Boruc and into the back of the net.

Despite scoring the goal, Begovic admitted that he felt bad and that is why he didn’t celebrate.

“It’s a cool feeling but it was a fortunate incident. I feel a bit bad for Boruc,” Begovic told BBC Sport.

“It is a long ball that got caught in the wind and it took a wicked bounce. It’s not nice to be on the receiving end of those things as a goalkeeper.

“It does not make a goalkeeper look good and after it I did not want to celebrate out of respect for him.”

Martino Unconcerned as Messi Goal Drought Continues

0

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino insisted that he believes Lionel Messi’s goal drought is a coincidence after the Argentine failed to net for the fourth consecutive league game in Barca’s 1-0 win over Espanyol on Friday.

It is the first time since April 2011 that Messi has gone four games without scoring in La Liga and he appeared on the fringes of the game throughout as Barca struggled to breakdown their city rivals at the Camp Nou.

“I continue to think the same about him,” Martino said after the game

“It is difficult to do an individual analysis of a player in every single game, but Leo continues to be the most important player in a team replete with important figures.

“His manner of playing still offers us a huge amount and if the team continues to win you will see the best of our best players shortly.”

Despite the victory that moves Barca, temporarily at least, four points clear of Atletico Madrid and nine ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, Messi cut a forlorn figure at the end of the match.

However, in between his goal drought in domestic competition, Messi did net in Barca’s 1-1 draw away to Milan in the Champions League and Martino used that goal as his evidence that there is no problem with the four-time World Player of the Year.

“I don’t think he is worried. It is a coincidence, in the same way that it is rare for a player to score at least a goal in every game of half a season (as Messi did last season), it is rare that he goes three or four games without scoring.

“For me it is three games because he scored in Milan. Today he assisted well, he had a chance with a header and a free-kick that went just past.

“Obviously I would be delighted if he does what he usually does and scores two or three goals every game, but when you set the bar so high and then don’t score it seems like there is a problem. For me, from what I see of him, there is no problem.”

An 11th win in 12 league games for Martino’s men was achieved thanks to a 10th clean sheet in 17 games in all competitions this season.

And whilst the Argentine admitted that offensively his side were not at their best, he is happy with the improvement they have made at the back in recent weeks.

“Without doubt, along with the end of the game against Atletico Madrid, it was the worst match at home (since Martino’s arrival).

“We needed pressure, dynamism, speed. We were finding the right players in the right areas, but we lacked the finesse and final pass.

“You could see that more in the first-half. When there are more spaces, like in the last 10 minutes, we created more chances.

“But to play 90 minutes and the opponent have just one or two chances is good. That is something we have improved on a lot since the first few weeks of the season.”

Juan Mata claims he never lost faith in Chelseaa

0

Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has claimed that he never lost faith in the club, despite being linked with a move away this Summer.

It was clear at the beginning of the season that new manager Jose Mourinho was not that impressed by the Spaniard, despite him winning the club’s player of the year award two seasons in a row.

Mourinho claimed that Mata didn’t have enough versatility to be in his starting line-up, but since then, he has used the 25-year-old more frequently.

Speaking to Football Focus on Saturday, Mata admitted that he never lost the faith in the club, despite all the rumours linking him with a move away.

“The manager doesn’t have to explain why one player is playing or not playing.

“I never lose faith, I believe in myself, I know what I can do.”

Manchester United deserve more criticism, says Villas-Boas

0

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that Manchester United and David Moyes are getting off lightly from the press considering their poor start to the season.

Moyes and co. currently sit eighth in the Premier League after their slow start to the 2013/2014 campaign and despite stealing all the headlines for all the wrong reasons, Villas-Boas believes they are getting off lightly.

The now-Spurs manager also highlighted how much stick he got during his short reign at Stamford Bridge as the Portuguese-man was ridiculed by the press for weeks after his poor start at Chelsea.

‘For the champions of England to sit in their position I don’t think there has been a lot of drama,’ he said.

‘I was involved in another club before and there was much more drama surrounding my results than Manchester United’s results.

‘What I would say is they look to be coming back strong. At the end of the season I would say they will be there competing for that first place.’

David Moyes: ‘I have the best strike partnership’

0

Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie are the deadliest strike-force in the Premier League and will be the best in world football soon, according to their manager David Moyes.

There has been a lot of debate recently about who has the better strike-force, Liverpool or Manchester United, and surprisingly more people suggested that the combination of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge is better than RVP and Rooney.

However, their boss doesn’t think that is correct.

‘Wayne and Robin, on their day, will be a match for any players in the world, never mind just in this country,’ he said. ‘So when those two are firing, they are the best.

‘They’re incredibly talented, both natural goalscorers and both can play in several positions.’

I didn’t want to wind them up, admits Wenger

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has spoken out about his club’s transfer bids for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, and the Frenchman has admitted that he did not want to wind up the Anfield club.

The Gunners made two formal bids for the Uruguayan in the Summer and the second one was the one that stole all the headlines.

Knowing that he had a clause in his contract, which was £40,000,000, Wenger and co. offered Liverpool £40,000,001, but despite the clause, Liverpool still rejected the bid and didn’t allow Suarez to have a say in the offer.

With the two coming to blows later on today, Wenger has admitted that their transfer offer was clumsy and they didn’t mean to offend the Merseyside club.

‘It was not the most subtle thing we have done but it was not meant to be provocative at all. It could be interpreted like that but it was not our purpose.

‘Relations are good — we kept in touch over that period. I don’t want to dwell on that situation. It was one of the transfers that didn’t work and in every club you have two or three like that. Life is about opportunities that you miss, some that you take.

‘He is doing very well, but what is important for me is the players  who play for Arsenal, not those who could play for Arsenal.

‘What is very important in this match are the players who play against Luis Suarez. We have a squad that is good enough to beat Liverpool and that is what we want to show and focus on.’

Jack Wilshere wants Luis Suarez at Arsenal

0

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted that he would love to have Liverpool striker Luis Suarez at the club, but the Englishman insists that the current crop of players at the club are good enough to win the Premier League.

The Gunners are currently top of the table, leading Liverpool by two points, who they play later on today, and despite them enjoying a successful start to the season, Wilshere still believes Suarez would be a great signing for the club.

Back in the Summer, Suarez openly admitted that he wanted to leave Anfield, but a move away never materialised despite Arsene Wenger making two offers for him.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Wilshere revealed that the Uruguayan would be a top-class signing for Arsenal, but he also believes the club can win the league without him.

‘He’s a great player. If I sit here and say we don’t want him I’d be lying.

‘A club like Liverpool should be playing in the Champions League. Suarez should be too.’

‘No-one’s ever questioned the starting 11,’ he said. ‘If you look through the league we have the best starting 11 player for player.

‘People question the squad. In midfield and at the back we have to switch on. But this is the best team and the best start I’ve ever had.’
