The midfielder was linked with a transfer away from Portugal for much of the summer but a deal never materialized.
Bruno Fernandes will reportedly leave Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window after failing to secure a summer move away from the club.
Manchester United, Tottenham and Real Madrid were all strongly linked with moves for the Portugal international during the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old ultimately remained with Sporting beyond the transfer deadline, and he has started the 2019-20 campaign in fine form – scoring twice and providing four assists in five appearances for his club. Now he is set to sign a new contract with Sporting CP, but he has been promised that he will be allowed to leave the club next summer.
However, according to O Jogo, Fernandes is expected to leave Portugal in the winter transfer window to make the next step in his career. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and several Premier League sides are still keen on snapping up the Portuguese international.
For the entire season, Real has been choosing a central midfielder, considering Pogba, Fernandes, Eriksen, and van de Beek. It looked like they were keeping Bruno as plan D, just in case A, B, and C would not work. Since van de Beek was not leaving his team this summer, the Spanish club started to move actively several days before the closing of the transfer window and eventually failed to make the move on time.
Manchester United and Tottenham, both wanted the talented player for themselves. Still, their agreements did not work. The negotiations that had lasted for several months never bore any significant result. United now are reportedly unlikely to move for the attacking midfielder in January, though, with the Red Devils said to be prioritizing a swoop for Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.
