According to latest reports, Inter Milan have reignited their interest in 2018 Balon d’Or winner and Real Madrid star, Luka Modric.
The 33-year-old has been on the Nerazzurri’s wishlist for quite some time now but a transfer was declined by Florentino Perez in the summer. Modric himself would not mind teaming up with his compatriots Ivan Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic and Sime Vrsaljko at the San Siro towards the final stages of his playing career.
Madrid are hesitant to let go of the 2018 World Cup semi-finalist before bringing in a replacement. Perez has set his sights on Lazio midfielder, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic but talks are yet to progress between the two parties.
Modric’s game like most world-class players is centred around his footballing intelligence and superior technical abilities. He still dictates the pace of his team’s attack from the central areas and chimes in with crucial goals and assists.
His contract is set to run for another two seasons and Madrid cannot afford to lose another star just months after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. The Galacticos are currently in a hairy situation, since losing 0-3 to Eibar in the La Liga and falling 5 points behind their arch-rivals and league leaders, Barcelona.
The embarrassing midweek loss to CSKA Moscow at the Bernabeu paints a picture of the struggle they are currently facing. It would be wise for Madrid to decide on Modric’s fate after Matteo Kovacic returns from his loan spell.
The younger Croatian has picked up form in the Premier League and is showcasing his creative skills under Maurizio Sarri. Perez might not have to look elsewhere to find immediate Modric’s successor.
