Midfielder was linked with move back to Spain
Manchester United have dismissed reports claiming Ander Herrera could be on his way back to Spain.
The midfielder has been linked with La Liga champions FC Barcelona and also Valencia, but United officials have put to bed the rumours by confirming the Spaniard won’t be leaving Old Trafford anytime soon.
The 26-year-old has been a long-term target of Barca, who were also interested in him during his Athletic Bilbao days, and officials at the Nou Camp have identified him as a potential long-term replacement for Xavi, who has left the club in order to join Qatar side Al Sadd.
Competition for Places
Herrera has seen his first-team status diminish under Louis van Gaal following the arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, but despite the competition for places, it’s understood he won’t be leaving the club.
United splashed out £28.5million on the midfielder and Van Gaal sees him as a vital part of their jigsaw. especially when more competitions come into play and squad depth is needed.
