Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho is on their candidate list

Manchester United are stepping up their quest to replace Louis van Gaal as manager at Old Trafford, and according to reports, they’ve held talks with Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal has come under heavy scrutiny over the past few months, with his United side lacking excitement and goals despite battling near the top of the table.

Although they are seemingly out of the title-race, they are still scrapping for a top-four finish, but with rivals above them continuing to pick up wins, it’s looking likely that they will miss out on Champions League football next season.

With that in mind, Ed Woodward is already planning on replacing Van Gaal at the end of the season, despite the Dutchman having one year left on his current contract.

Van Gaal wants to retire at the end of his United contract, but it may come a year earlier if Woodward decides to part ways with him.

Two In Contention

Should United be on the look-out for a new manager, it’s believed they will look towards Pochettino or Mourinho.

The Argentinian is making a name for himself at Tottenham Hotspur, whilst Mourinho is still unemployed following his dismissal from Chelsea back in December.

According to reports, United officials have made contact with the Spurs boss and Mourinho regarding the Old Trafford hot-seat, but it’s not yet clear who is in pole position to take over from Van Gaal.

With Spurs set to finish in the top-four, it’s believed Pochettino isn’t considering a new job just yet.
