Newcastle United sign Swiss center back Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna. Schar has joined the club on a three-year deal with his release clause of £3 million being the transfer fee. Schar is lucky to play football this season as well as Deportivo faced relegation in May.

Schar said, “I’m really happy to be here. The club is a really big club for me. It has a big name, and it is a brilliant chance for me. I’m not like a typical defender. I, of course, defend, but I’m quite good with the ball – I like to play, I want to build up the game from behind, and I think that is a strength of mine. I have also scored some headers – that could also be a strength and hopefully I can use it here. I hope to start training with the team soon, and I’m looking forward to everything that’s coming. At the moment, I just want to get started.”

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez said, “I’m really pleased to welcome Fabian to Newcastle United. He is an international, did well in the World Cup and has great experience. He adds competition in this position and that is a positive for the team.”

Fabian Schar is Newcastle’s third signing this summer after Slovak goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and South Korean national skipper Ki Seung-yeung. The 26-year old has been a regular for the Switzerland national team since 2013 and has featured at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and Euro 2016. He scored Swtizerland’s winner against Albania in Euro 2016. He played all of Switzerland’s group games at the 2018 World Cup but missed their round of 16 match against Sweden due to suspension.
