Atletico Madrid have completed their sixth signing of the 2019 summer window in Ivan Saponjic.
The Rojiblancos has agreed terms with Benfica to sign the 20-year-old striker.
Saponjic has moved to the Wanda Metropolitano on a three-year deal and has already started training under Diego Simeone. He joins Atletico’s long recruitment drive this summer with the club taking a completely new direction under their Argentinian boss.
Saponjic is a burly figure, standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall. He is definitely a huge presence in the opposition box and is a proven goalscorer.
The Serbia U21 international scored 6 goals in 28 appearances for the Benfica B side last season. He is still developing into the lethal striker everyone thinks he might become.
Saponjic is expected to serve as an understudy to Alvaro Morata next term in the Atletico ranks. Diego Costa is tipped to leave the Spanish capital after a failed third stint with the Rojiblancos and so is Antoine Griezmann with immediate interests from Barcelona.
That would give the youngster a lot of opportunities to break into the first team if he manages to prove his worth. Atletico have also added Marcos Llorente, Hector Herrera, Felipe Monteiro, Joao Felix and Renan Lodi.
