It was about time the Italian Federation started reacting to the racial abuse problem in Serie A.

Miralem Pjanic was racially abused while playing for Juventus at Brescia, with the home club handed a partial stadium closure.

Brescia have been hit with a partial stadium closure following racial abuse aimed at Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic, although the punishment is suspended, according to Corrierre dello Sport. The midfielder scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the Serie A champions on Tuesday but was reportedly subjected to chants of “zingaro”, which in English translates as “gypsy”.

Bosnia international Pjanic subsequently condemned “demented racists” in a post on Instagram about the incident.

Serie A disciplinary chiefs stated in a bulletin on Friday that Brescia’s ‘Curva Nord’ section of their stadium would be closed for one home game; however, it added that the punishment has been suspended for a period of 12 months.

Earlier this season, Cagliari avoided punishment from the league after Inter striker Romelu Lukaku was racially abused. Lukaku was subjected to monkey chants, yet it was ruled by the sporting justice panel of the Italian FA that there was too much shouting and whistling to identify the “discriminatory” nature.

AC Milan player Frank Kessie is also one of the many racially abused players this season in Italy. In mid-September, Hellas Verona supporters aimed offensive chants at Kessie during the first half of a 1-0 loss to AC Milan. In spite of everything, the FIGC officials made a decision to take no action against Cagliari and Hellas Verona for the actions of their supporters during the games, which caused great controversy.
