Liverpool legend admits he can call any past manager, except Rafa

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has revealed in his new book that he can call any past manager of the club, apart from one – Rafael Benitez.

According to the midfielder, the Spanish manager didn’t like him as a person and the two never really saw eye to eye during their time together despite it being a rather successful era for the club.

Gerrard, who left Liverpool in the summer for LA Galaxy, has confirmed in his new book that despite the duo enjoying a good working relationship, they never saw eye-to-eye on a personal level, and the former-skipper has even stated that the manager never really liked him as a person.

Gerrard’s Story

Writing in his new book, My Story, serialised in the Daily Mail, Gerrard said: “I don’t think Rafa Benitez liked me as a person. I’m not sure why, but that’s the feeling I got from him. It probably started even before he spoke to me, when he met my mum.”

The 35-year-old continued to explain that when Benitez and his Mum first met, the Spaniard asked bizarre questions and also asked if the midfielder was only in it for the money.

Gerrard then added: “I used to think he favoured our Spanish speakers. He was an especially big fan of South American players, which is fine. It caused no problem between us.

“At press conferences he might call other players by their first name but I was always ‘Gerrard’. It was the same in the dressing room. He would read out the team and use nicknames. But, for me, it would just be ‘Gerrard’.”
