Luis Suarez is confident that he will be fit and ready to play for Uruguay from the start of the World Cup, after undergoing surgery on his knee on Thursday.

Liverpool’s striker visited Montevideo to undergo a arthroscopic partial resection on his meniscus. One official reported that there was no complications, as Suarez left the surgery in a wheelchair.

Suarez was quoted as saying: “I’ll work quietly and very hard in the coming days to be 100 per cent and help my team-mates.”

The striker sustained a heavy challenge from Newcastle’s, Paul Dummet on the last day of the season, but Suarez stilll played the rest of the match.

Dumment, who was sent off for the wild challenge, has admitted to recieving death threats from Uruguayan fans on Twitter.

Dummet has said:”The challenge was inadvertent. I hit him and the ball with my left foot and he went down under the challenge.

“I hope he makes the World Cup because he is one of the best players in the world – so he should be there.

“Having said that, I injured my meniscus three years ago and I was out for three months, so it will depend on the injury and exactly where it is on the knee.”
