Inter Milan still interested in Tottenham star

0

Inter Milan are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur record-signing Erik Lamela in the Summer.

The former-Roma winger hasn’t settled at all in England and is struggling to break into Spurs’ first-team, despite them spending £30million on him last Summer in order to replace outgoing Gareth Bale.

There was talks of a loan-move back to Serie A in January, but a potential move was stalled.

However, that hasn’t put off Inter and it is believed that they are ready to come back in for Lamela in the Summer, and according to reports in Italy, the midfielder is keen to make the move back to Italy.

It is speculated that Lamela is interested in working with Inter boss Walter Mazzarri, and talks between both parties are ongoing.

We need to start better this time, says Wenger

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned his players that ‘every minute counts’ in tonight’s glamour tie with Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16.

The Gunners faced the German giants in this stage last season, and after just 20-minutes of the tie, Wenger’s men were already 2-0 down at the Emirates Stadium.

They eventually went on to lose 3-1 at home, before surprising everyone by beating Munich 2-0 in Germany, which saw them eliminated only on goal difference, and ahead of tonight’s game, Wenger has urged his players to make every minute count.

“With the quality of the players on the pitch on both sides, it’s nearly impossible to play without style,” he said. “All the quality players are exceptionally gifted people and they will produce a quality game.

“If you look at the history of the Champions League, you will see that it is always the big players who make a difference, and after the analysis is always adapted to the team that wins. But most of the time it’s the big players who make the difference on the pitch.

“It is important [to make a fast start] because every minute counts in a game of this stature and we are conscious of that and we’ll try to start very strongly. We have big home strengths recently because we don’t give goals away and that will certainly be vitally important in this tie.”

Shola Ameobi hints at St James Park departure

0

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi could be set to leave St James Park this Summer once his contract expires.

The Nigerian’s current deal expires at the end of this season and he has confirmed that no renewal talks are in the pipeline with the club, and despite the thought of leaving the clup upsetting him, he knows that his future is unclear.

The 32-year-old has made over 300 appearances for The Magpies and has been at the club well over a decade, and he knows that when it’s time to leave the club, it will be a sad moment in his career.

“After the summer, my future is unclear,” he told the Shields Gazette.

“Basically, I’ll do what I’ve always done. Like I’ve always said, I’ve never taken it (playing for Newcastle) for granted. Every time I step on that pitch, I relish it.

“When it does finally end, it’ll be a sad moment, but at the moment my focus is trying to help this club.

“That’s what I’ve always tried to do, and that will never change.”

Giroud apologises for rendevouz

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has taken to Twitter to apologise to his family, friends and Arsenal Football Club for his hotel meeting with international model Celia Kay. Giroud has attempted to clear up the confusion and mess left behind regarding his personal life by insisting he has not commited adultery. The Frenchman has been forced to speak out after a picture of him, taken by Kay, wearing very little was published in a French national newspaper and has since swept the internet. The incident took place on February 1st, the night before Arsenal’s home game with Crystal Palace.

But Giroud took to his Twitter account to apologise: ‘Ultimate precision with respect to my apologies… Yes I made a mistake but I have not commited adultery! Things are clear…’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against Giroud. He said, “It is an internal matter but I do not want to comment publicly because I respect his privacy.”

Giroud also apologised to his wife Jennifer- who also has a daughter named Jade- and his club,

“I apologise to my wife, family, friends, my manager and the Arsenal fans.”

Kay, who models for international magazines such as Maxim and FHM, was pictured arriving at the hotel in Canary Wharf at 12.50am and leaving at 3.04 that night. She insists that nothing happened between them, and Giroud may avoid a fine from the club due to this claim. The Gunners had planned to fine the 6ft 4in striker £230,000 but backed off after his denial.

Manuel Pellegrini furious with referee

0

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has voiced his displeasure at match referee Jonas Eriksson, for his performance in last night’s glamour tie with Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

City hosted the La Liga giants in the Champions League last-16 first-leg, and with the game all square at 0-0, it was anyones for the taking, but a controversial decision from Eriksson in the second-half seemingly cost Pellegrini’s side.

After Lionel Messi was put through one-on-one with Joe Hart, City defender Martin Demichelis decided to try and tackle the Argentine, but he only managed to bring the speedster down and concede a penalty and also receive a red card for being the last man.

However, after watching replays, it showed that the initial contact of the tackle happened outside of the box and Messi fell into the box, therefore it should have been a free-kick rather than a penalty, and that is something that annoyed Pellegrini and he voiced his displeasure after the final whistle.

“Of course I have a complaint, not only for the penalty and the red card.

“I think in the whole match we didn’t have a referee with impartiality to both teams.

“He decided the game. He decided the game because it was a foul by (Sergio) Busquets on Navas. The referee was three metres away and he didn’t blow the whistle and after that the foul from Demichelis is outside the box, it’s not a penalty.

“Important mistakes against a great team like Barcelona make it difficult to win.”

He added: “I think it is a mistake to nominate a referee that has had problems with Barcelona.

“Maybe he made mistakes in Milan. To have the same referee here, I repeat, is a mistake.”

A Dani Alves strike in stoppage-time secured Barca a 2-0 victory in the first-leg.

Mata convinced top players will join in the summer.

0

Manchester United winger Juan Mata believes that the worlds biggest players will still be attracted to Old Trafford in the summer.

United have struggled this season, however, Mata, who signed from Chelsea in January for a £37 million fee, is confident that big names will come.

Mata stated in an interview to Canal plus….

think this club is at a stage of change, but I can tell you that the best players in the world will always arrive.’

The rebuilding process started with the acquisition of Mata for £37.1million in January. And if reports in Portugal are anything to go by, then United have already started scouring the continent for further signings, with Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala said to have been watched extensively of late.

United have been linked with some of Europe’s top names, with both Diego Costa, and Southampton starlet Luke Shaw.

However, Mata still believes that his current team-mates can turn their fortunes around.

The objective is to get to the Champions League spots,’ Mata added.

‘It’s difficult because Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton are playing well and fighting for the top four, but I think we have a team who can do it.

‘This is Manchester United. When this club wins two, three or four matches in a row, it has a very important mental strength, a winner’s mentality. We are coming and I think we can do it, but we have to win a lot of games first.

‘This is a club that should always be fighting for the Premier League. I think, in the last 20 or 21 years, they’ve won 13 times.

‘The mentality of this club is to win and fight for all the trophies. Unfortunately this year, things haven’t gone so well in the league, but I believe there is still time this season.’

Mata has had a superb start since his move, and stated that it was always going to be tough for David Moyes to emulate former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

‘But at the end of the day, it was these players that won the league last season and the new manager has arrived knowing what this club is.

‘I think he has a great relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson and with time everything will get better, the results will get better and we’ll get back to being where this club deserves to be.

‘My relationship with him is good, friendly and from the off, he seemed to me to be a great person.’

Arsenal and Liverpool target admits he is ready to move

0

Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has revealed his intentions to leave the French club in the Summer, with Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool interested, but he insists that no decision will be made until after the Brazilian World Cup.

Valbuena has been a long-term target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and despite never making an official bid, it finally looks like the Frenchman could be joining the English Premier League, but whether it will be with Arsenal is another story.

It was reported earlier in the week that the 29-year-old had been given permission to leave the club, and now in a recent interview, Valbuena has confirmed that after the World Cup, he will be looking for a move away from Ligue 1.

He told Le 10 Sport: “I can only say that this is my final season here, but I do not want to talk about my future. Now I want make the best [season] possible with Marseille and my dream is to play in the World Cup in Brazil. Afterwards we will see.”

David Moyes is poised to step up his bid to sign France and Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala.

0

Moyes wants Mangala to replace Nemanja Vidic in what will be a much-changed back four at Old Trafford next season, but faces competition from Chelsea and Manchester City for the centre-back.

Mangala, 23, has a £35m buy-out clause in his Porto contract, but Moyes has been promised unlimited funds to rebuild the fading champions and is ready to make his move for a player tracked by former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mangala joined Porto in 2011 from Standard Liege in a £6m deal and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe.

Moyes will have huge holes to fill in his defence this summer, with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra ready to follow Vidic out of Old Trafford.

Ferdinand is expected to retire, while Evra is set to return to France to join either Monaco or Paris St-Germain.

Vidic, meanwhile, is understood to gave agreed a two-year deal with Italian giants Inter Milan.

Manchester City 0 Barcelona 2

0

Barcelona came away from the Etihad Stadium with a two goal advantage going into the Nou Camp second leg, following second half goals from Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves, with Messi scoring a controversial penalty.

City would have felt frustrated that chances went missing in pressure moments, as two mistakes eventually coast the Sky Blues the game in the end.

Barcelona started the game as they usually do in most of their games, with the experienced Xavi dictating the midfield play, as Barcelona passed the ball in their Tika Takka style that they are most famed for.

Lionel Messi was looking rather lively, twisting and turning Martin Demichelis, as Manuel Pellegrini watched on.

City then came into the game more in the opening quarter of an hour or so, with Jesus Naves finding space down the wing, before efficiantly finding Negredo, who shot just wide.

Negrado then controlled a ball which was pumped down by Kompany, with the striker shaking off his marker, before lashing a rasping effort across the face of goal, in an entertaining opening fifteen minutes.

Alvaro Negrado then saw his shot well saved by Victor Valdes after 26 minutes, as City pressed on a crisp, but chilly evening at the Etihad.

Lionel Messi was proving to be a handful for Kompany and co, and after collecting the ball off Iniesta, the Argentine found some space, and smashed the ball just over Hart’s bar after 30 minutes.

Xavi then saw his pile driver from outside the box well tipped over by Hart, after 32 minutes.

Barcelona then had a penalty appeal turned down, after Gael Clichy appeared to have handled a cross, however, the Barcelona protests were waved away.

Negrado then nodded just wide after 35 minutes, following a neat ball from Yaya Toure, who had played in Clichy, who assisted the cross.

Aleksander Kolarov then went close after 38 minutes, as Barcelona were being pinned into their own area.

Spanish midfield dynamo Andres Iniesta then saw his driven attempt go just past the post, in a fairly even first half of play.

A free kick from David Silva caused chaos in the box, with Yaya Toure seeing his effort well saved by Valdes just before half time.

City started the second half in a stable manner, but the Catalans snuffed out any real opening.

However, City’s bubble would soon be burst after 54 minutes, in a controversial fashion, as Barcelona were awarded a rather dubious penalty kick.

Tricky Argentine Messi escaped Demichelis, after running onto a lovely through ball from Iniesta, Messi was then brought down by his international team-mate, with Demichelis recieving a red card, for a foul which appeared to be outside the box.

Messi stepped up, and slotted down the middle of Hart’s goal, sending the keeper the wriong way, to give the La Liga side the lead.

City, who were obviously missing Aguero, almost found an equaliser, however, David Silva saw his half Volley well saved by Victor Valdes in the 76th minute of the encounter.

Fullback Dani Alves then wrapped up the win, after some neat build up play, the Brazilian found space, and drove at the City defence, before slotting under the advancing Hart infront of the travelling supporters.

City captain Vincent Kompany stated after the defeat on his official verified Twitter account…

“Not very happy tonight for many reasons but I can’t fault anyone for effort. Tough task now but I’m not giving up.”

He also stated to ITV Sport..

By no means we thought they were superior. When it was 11 v 11, maybe we showed a bit more respect.

“[When asked if Barcelona were the best team Manchester City have faced] Not at all. Incredibly efficient though – they have great individual quality.

“There was a lot of soft fouls. In the Premier League they would have not been given.

“If the tempo was in this game it would have been to our advantage.

“If the game is the same as today, and we manage to stay away from some fouls, we have got a chance [in the second leg].”

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas also stated following his sides win…

“We had a great result tonight. The fans put so much pressure on and that’s what makes this so win special. We had a point to prove, and we did it very well. Some people were talking a bit too much before the game and now they have to shut up for a few days.

“You never know in football, but in three weeks we will have to play very, very well.”

The Final Word

0

Manchester United’s Juan Mata has revealed all on his final conversation with former manager Jose Mourinho before his transfer from Chelsea. Mata was Chelsea’s player of the year two seasons running, but fell out of favour when Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge over the summer, and eventually forced the move out of the club. Most of the Spanish international’s appearences this season either came from the bench or saw him substituted before the end of the game, leaving him frustrated with lack of playing time during ‘World Cup year’.

Now Mata has revealed that Mourinho was sympathetic to his situation and supported his move to his new club.

“We spoke and he [Mourinho] said that this was a good option for me, and I told him I thought this was a good option for me. I wasn’t playing, and, if I’m honest, when I am playing football I am happy.”

“It’s the thing I like to do most. He wished me good luck and told be to be good, as did everyone at the club. I am very grateful for my time at Chelsea and pleased with my achievements there.

Since joining United, Mata has made four starts from a possible four under new manager David Moyes, as he hopes to secure a place in Spain’s World Cup squad in the summer.

Bayern Munich are “Untouchable”

0

It has been well documented that the February fixtures for Arsenal are season defining, and who could argue? With games against Liverpool and Manchester United out of the way already, they still have to play Bayern Munich at home. This game could determine the success of the club’s season as it would put them in a great adavantage to progress further in the Champions League, if they were to win and it could raise the confidence of the players massively and help them so much in terms of their challenge for the Premier League title, the F.A. Cup and the Champions League.

But this is probably Arsenal’s most difficult fixture of the season, with Bayern Munich having not lost in the league yet this season and only going from strength to strength in Pep Guardiola’s 1st season in charge of The Bavarians. It is a frightening task for Arsenal to try and accomplish but it is certainly something that Arsenal have shown that they can accomplish this season.

One player who knows all to well the threat that Bayern Munich pose is Per Mertesacker and he has warned his club to be on top of their game when Bayern Munich come to the Emirates.

“Bayern are untouchable at the moment, both in the Bundesliga and in Europe,” Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League last year by Bayern, on away goals, but they still managed to beat Bayern 2-0 at the Allianz Arena and Mertesacker added that “the only thing that makes me positive is that we beat them in Munich last year.”

He went on to tell Germany’s Sport1.de: “That result allows us to go into the game with a cetain degree of faith. We’re going to give it our best.”

Mertesaker admitted that Bayern have gotten even better since lifting the European Cup in May last year.

“They’re a little bit better in every department under Pep Guardiola,” he said, ” They’ve set a new benchmark.

“We’re going to have to get a different result this time because the 3-1 defeat practically decided the tie last year. That was the decisive game.”

Salah needs time

0

Following a number of impressive performances in the Champions League group stages, in which he scored twice against Chelsea, Mohamed Salah attracted interest from multiple clubs. There was a point when it seemed certain he would join Liverpool but they stalled and Chelsea swooped in to steal him in deal reportedly worth £11 million.

But so far he has not shown anything to suggest that he was worth the reported £11 million that Chelsea paid. But then again, he is still only 21 years of age and Chelsea would surely have been looking to the future with a signing like Salah.

But Mourinho believes that Salah needs time to adapt to his new surroundings. Mourinho had this to say, “It’s important for him to come step by step and try to improve and adapt. This is a different world, a different quality of football from the one he comes from.

“You know, playing at Stamford Bridge is not the same as playing for Basel. With Basel you play to enjoy your time and you have nothing to lose. While in the blue shirt, you have 40,000 people that you are required to please. Everyone wants you to be decisive, all the time.

“So I think Mohamed (Salah) needs 6 months to adapt to our game and the demands of the Premier League.

“I am calm and I’m telling him he has time because we have confidence in him. I think next season is Mohamed Salah’s breakthrough season.”

Wilshere: Defense the focus

0

Jack Wilshere has insisted that tomorrow Arsenal will focus on their defending against Bayern Munich- and can win the game. The midfielder is convinced The Gunners will not have to chase the tie in the second leg, and tomorrow will be chasing a win. Arsenal lost to Bayern Munich on away goals this time last year, but Wilshere is sure that this year they can pull off winning the tie and book their place in the quarter final.

In the game at The Emirates last year, Arsenal were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, and Wilshere says that the team know they have to focus on defending, and Arsenal go into the game with an impressive defensive record at home, since only Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool the only players to score there this season. Wilshere is confident that this can work to Arsenal’s advantage,

“We were a bit nervous going into the game last year. We had just lost to Blackburn in the FA Cup the game before. There was a lot of tension and it was a big game. Once we calmed down, we took the game to them a little bit.”

“This year we’ll be intelligent going into the game. First we’ll work on our defensive duties then we’ll begin to play. We’ve often spoken of the importance of staying in the game.”

One factor in Arsenal’s favour, according to Wilshere, is that Arsenal have learned how to ‘win ugly’.

“It’s been a long time since we won a trophy, but this season we’ve shown in games that we can win while not being at our best.”

Anelka Set For Quenelle Hearing Next Week

0

Nicolas Anelka’s discipinary hearing into his controversial ‘quenelle’ salute is due to start early next week.

The three-man independent regulatory panel’s hearing is expected to last several days but to be completed by the end of the week.

West Brom’s French striker faces a minimum five-match ban after being charged by the Football Association with performing an alleged anti-Semitic gesture during his club’s match against West Ham on December 28.

The 34-year-old has denied the gesture was anti-Semitic and requested a personal hearing.

Anelka was charged last month with an aggravated offence after making a gesture that was judged to be “abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper”.

The aggravated breach was that it included “a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief”.

The quenelle has been described as an inverted Nazi salute and its invention has been credited to French comedian Dieudonne M’bala M’bala, a friend of Anelka’s, who was been prosecuted in France for anti-Semitism.

Anelka maintains his goal celebration was an anti-establishment gesture in support of Dieudonne.

Last month, Dieudonne was banned from entering the UK after the home office made him subject to an exclusion order.

Hodgson: Heat Will Be Fine For Us

0

Roy Hodgson got a feel for the hot and humid climate of Manaus on Monday as he visited the Brazilian jungle city for the first time.

Hodgson and a delegration including the British ambassador to Brazil enjoyed a tour of the city where England will begin their World Cup campaign against Italy.

The England manager enjoyed a boat ride up the Amazon river and then visited the city’s 130-year-old royal opera house before taking a look at the 42,000-capacity Arena Amazonia which will host the Three Lions’ Group D opener on June 14.

From now until the World Cup, temperatures can rise above 30 degrees centigrade in Manaus, and its proximity to the Amazon rainforest means humidity levels hit over 95 per cent.

The FA has made extensive preparations to ensure England’s players are able to cope with the conditions and, having managed Switzerland in the sweltering heat of USA ’94, Hodgson is aware of what lies in store for his squad this June.

“It is hot here, but World Cups are played in the summer,” Hodgson told the BBC.

“It was hot in South Africa (for the last World Cup) and it was very hot in America in ’94.

“It will be hot here, that is something you have to come to terms with.

“What we are interested in now is getting a feel for the slightly more different tropical climate in the north of Brazil vis-a-vis Rio, where we have been and played.”
