Arsenal manager predicts open title race for season ahead

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes this year’s title race could be one of the closest in recent history of the Premier League as three of the top four club’s all have new managers at the helm.

Champions Manchester United, runners-up Manchester City and third-placed Chelsea have all made changes to their staff and have all got new faces at the helm after Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Roberto Mancini was sacked and Rafael Benitez’s time at Chelsea came to an expected end.

The hotseats at the top-three clubs are now taken up by David Moyes, who is at United, Manuel Pelligrini, who is at City and the returning Jose Mourinho, who is back at Chelsea.

One thing that has stayed the same is Arsene Wenger being the manager at the Emirates Stadium and he believes the manager changes make this year’s title race as unpredictable as ever.

“The fact that of the four top teams last year, three have changed manager will certainly create the most interest to see how they all respond to that,” the manager told Arsenal Player.

“You have less questions about Mourinho returning to Chelsea because he already knows the club and they are a stable team.

“These teams changed managers but there is a stability there [in terms of the players] so that shouldn’t create too much uncertainty.

“Pellegrini has a lot of experience, David Moyes has a lot of experience and Mourinho as well, so they will handle it very well.

“Let’s not expect presents from these clubs because that would be the wrong way to go into the championship. Let’s just think they will be as strong as ever and make sure that we are strong.”

As for Wenger, his season starts at home as his side host Aston Villa, but he believes nothing will be decided early on in the 2013/2014 campaign.

“Recently I spoke with some managers and they think it will be more open than ever,” he said. “Maybe they are right because it is difficult to make any predictions.

“One of the interests in the Premier League is that compared to all the other championships – Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Scotland, where you can predict with a 50 per cent chance of success of who will win the league – in England what makes it great is that it is unpredictable.

“Maybe that is why everyone loves it.”

Arsene Wenger praises goal-line technology

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed goal-line technology and the Frenchman believes it will be a huge success in English football.

After years of rejecting it and putting it off, the FA and UEFA have finally made the decision to bring goal-line technology into football and it is expected to be used in this year’s Premier League campaign after being trialed out at the Emirates Cup earlier on in the summer.

The technology works by little cameras being inserted into the goal posts and then if the ball does in fact cross the ball, a little beep will be sent to the referee’s watch which will then let him know that the ball has crossed the line.

Wenger, who has been talking to the club’s official website, has admitted that he is a huge fan of the technology and he hopes it will be a huge hit this season.

“The only bumps on the road could be if something very dramatic happens between the moment the ball goes over the line and the response of the [referee’s] watch,” the manager told Arsenal Player.

“That’s a second and in a second a lot can happen in football. But there are about three incidents per year where the goal-line is a problem so let’s hope it goes well. It’s important if we want to go further that this experience goes well.”

Arsene Wenger promises signings before deadline

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has once again reiterated that the club will sign players before the summer transfer window slams shut at the beginning of September.

Despite promising signings all summer, Arsenal have failed to make any major signings and even fell short of signing Gonzalo Higuain and also Stevan Jovetic.

The Gunners are fiercely linked with Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo and also Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, but neither deal looks like it will go through with other clubs interested in both players.

Wenger has so far only managed to sign Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer and the lack of activity has left the majority of Arsenal fans worried, but speaking to the club’s official website, the Frenchman admitted that the club will be busy before the deadline shuts.

“We are active,” he told Arsenal Player. “We are in a situation like Manchester United, like Chelsea, where everybody expects signings and at the moment not a lot has happened.

“There are 18 days to go, so that is a long time in the transfer market and we will be active.

“I cannot certify what the number [of players coming in will be] but we will be active until the end, that is for sure.”

The North London based club are pretty short on numbers after having a clear-out of several first-team players this summer, so signings will be needed urgently for The Gunners if they are to fight for silverware to end their eight-year trophy droubt.

Arsene Wenger reveals why he let Gervinho leave

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the reasons behind selling Ivory Coast international Gervinho this summer to Italian side AS Roma.

The Frenchman admitted that the winger lacked confidence and was in desperate need of a new challenge and that is why he allowed him to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer in a £7million move, which sees Arsenal lose out on £4million after they signed him from French side Lille for £11million.

During his two years at Arsenal, Gervinho was never able to find his Lille-form and only really turned on the style at the beginning for the 2012/2013 season, but after picking up an injury, the Ivorian never re-found his form and eventually left the North London based club.

Speaking to the club’s official wesbite, Wenger revealed the reasons behind selling Gervinho.

“I made that decision [to sell Gervinho] because he looked to play with a lack of confidence, especially at the Emirates,” explained Wenger in his exclusive interview on Arsenal Player.

“He is a very creative player, an instinctive dribbler and for that you need a lot of confidence to be completely efficient. I felt that in the last six months it was very difficult for him to express his talent in a confident way.

“Then you sit there and think, ‘Do I bring him back or does he need a new challenge to get that confidence back?’ and I did not want to stop him from getting a new chance.”

The sale of Gervinho leaves Arsenal with just three recognised wingers in; Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski.

Estimated cost of a goal at Premier League clubs

0

In the above image, you can see how much each goal costs at every Premier League home ground.

Bad news for Arsenal fans is that they spend a whopping £36.46 for every home goal.

Last season, they averaged 39.6 home goals and a match-day ticket at the Emirates Stadium on average costs £76.

The best value for money is actually at champions Manchester United. The Red Devils on average score 48.2 home goals a season with a match-day ticket costing on average £42. This means the United faithful are spending roughly £16.56 on every goal.

Sam Allardyce takes dig at Liverpool’s handling of Stewart Downing

0

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he has signed the Aston Villa Stewart Downing rather than the Liverpool version.

The Hammers boss has admitted that Downing will be his last signing of the summer after spending £6million on the Englishman and Allardyce is hoping that he sees the old Downing at Upton Park.

Back in 2011, Liverpool were so impressed by the Villa midfield-man, they spent a whopping £20million on him, and the West Ham manager is hoping he can help re-find the Stewart Downing of old.

The 29-year-old only managed three goals during his two year spell at Anfield, but Allardyce is hoping that he can go back to his attacking style that saw him be a hit at both Aston Villa and Middlesborough.

‘I was more Stewart Downing Aston Villa than I was Stewart Downing Liverpool,’ said Allardyce. ‘That’s more of what I’m looking for.

‘That’s no reflection on what Stewart did at Liverpool because he was asked to play a different way than he was at Aston Villa.

‘As everyone knows I like crosses and there are lots of managers who don’t like any more.

‘Stewart is a quality player, value for money, somebody who sits at the top of our performance stats. As well as a nice guy.’

Wolfsburg deny deal is done with Luiz Gustavo

0

Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has dismissed reports suggesting that the club had secured a deal to sign Bayern Munich midfielder and Arsenal target Luiz Gustavo.

Reports broke out last night that the Brazilian midfielder was ready to reject a move to the Premier League in order to stay in Germany after a £17million bid was accepted by the German champions as they don’t see Gustavo being a permanent feature at the club.

Previous to these reports, it was believed that Arsenal were close to wrapping up the deal after they also had a £17million bid accepted by Pep Guardiola’s side and it was thought they were in the driving seat because of Gustavo’s wish to be playing in the Champions League, something Arsenal could offer which Wolfsburg can’t.

Speaking in an interview, the Wolfsburg director admitted that a deal could be in place but he also refused that it was 100% complete.

He told reporters: “The chances are not bad but the deal is not done. To report that is just false.”

The coach of the Bundesliga outfit also moved quickly to deny any truth in the reports.

He told SID: “We can’t confirm the transfer yet. He has been with the Selecao, so we haven’t had more talks.

“But we hope he will decide for Wolfsburg. Of course we know there are several other clubs interested.”

David Moyes expects new signings

0

New Manchester United manager David Moyes has insisted that the club will make new signings this summer, despite their failures so far this summer.

The Premier League champions have so far failed in their pursuit of Barcelona duo Thiago Alcantara, who went on to join German champions Bayern Munich, and Cesc Fabregas, who has once again reiterated his desire to stay on at the Nou Camp.

With the new campaign just days away, Moyes has spoken ahead of the opening weekend and has admitted that he expects signings to be made.

“I’m confident we will have players in.

“We are involved in several players we are looking at and that will continue. Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so, but we are working very hard to do so.”

“This was always going to be a difficult window for me personally because I joined Manchester United on 1 July so it is giving you a short period to get to know the players and to get to know the market.

“Yes of course I was working on it during the summer but it is never the same until you have actually worked with the players and been around them.

“But what I do know is the group of players we have got are a great group of players – they won the Premier League last year.

“We have got lots of young exciting players – a lot of them played for England last night – so it is important that we focus on the players we have got at Manchester United and how well they have done last year.

“There is not much change so hopefully they will be able to continue the way they finished last season.”

Moyes also admitted that he regularly talks to former-boss and now Director of Football Sir Alex Ferguson.

He added: “I went to see him at his house and I speak to him quite regularly on the phone. It’s good to have someone I can go to if I need any advice, especially at a club like Manchester United.

“He’s great and he’s someone I look forward to taking advice from in the future.”

Ian Holloway: Zaha can become a Manchester United Legend

0

The Crystal Palace boss believes Wilfried Zaha can become a legend at Manchester United. The winger, who joined Manchester United in January, helped Ian Holloways Crystal Palace earn promotion after spending the rest of the season on loan at Selhurst Park.

Holloway believes what he has seen so far in pre-season has potential to give Zaha a first team profile for Manchester United. Holloway also believes that Zaha has something different compared to most players who induct themselves into the Premier League,

– He has something that changes games and he’ll learn from experienced players.

He also said:

– I was intrigued in the Community Shield when he tried to play a clever back heel which didn’t work. The first player over to him was Ryan Giggs clearly saying: ‘Don’t do that again, son’. Holloway stated

– The kid was a joy to work with and I would also say he was one of the nicest young men I’ve known.

Roberto Martinez delighted that Marouane Fellaini’s clause has expired

0

New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that he celebrated when midfielder Marouane Fellaini’s clause in his contract expired at the end of July.

The Belgium international, who was in sensational form for The Toffees last season, did have a clause in his contract which meant the club would have to accept any offer worth over £23million for the 25-year-old, but luckily for Martinez, no clubs made a formal bid.

Despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, it looks like Fellaini will still be at Goodison Park for the new season and that information delights the former-Wigan boss, who took over from David Moyes this summer.

Martinez said: “As you can imagine, for a manager that gives you a real sense of celebration when that day arrives.”

“I don’t think I am giving away anything that nobody knows. It’s well documented that Marouane’s contract has a clause – that clause expired on 31 July.”

“We are focussing on the league. You are not going to stop the speculation; if there are any players coming in or going out the fans will be the first to know.

“But we are in a position where I don’t mind to have other clubs looking at my players because that means they are doing good things.”

Etienne Capoue completes Tottenham move

0

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have completed their fourth major summer signing today as they captured Toulouse’s Etienne Capoue after the Frenchman passed his medical at the club and agreed personal terms.

Capoue has made 174 appearance for Toulouse, scoring 13 goals in the process. The 25-year-old has also won seven caps for France and can also play as a central defender.

The Frenchman joins Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, who signed from Corinthians, Belgium winger Nacer Chadli, who came from FC Twente and Spain striker Roberto Soldado, who arrived for a club record fee of £26m from Spanish side Valencia.

The arrival of Capoue means that current Spurs midfielder Scott Parker could be on his way out of White Hart Lane with Championship side Queens Park Rangers close to agreeing a £2million move for the 32-year-old.

David Moyes unhappy with United’s fixtures

0

New Manchester United manager David Moyes has criticised the fixture list and has labelled their opening fixtures as the toughest they have ever faced in twenty years.

The English champions travel to Capital One Cup winners Swansea City on the opening day of the Premier League which is then followed up by home games against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea and newly-promoted Crystal Palace.

As well as facing Chelsea, Moyes will have to travel to Anfield and the Etihad Stadium to face fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Talking in an interview, the former-Everton boss revealed that he doesn’t believe the fixture list is fair on his side and he has put it down to them winning the league last year so comfortably.

“I find it hard to believe that’s the way the balls came out of the bag, that’s for sure,” said the Scot.

“I hope it’s not because Manchester United won the league quite comfortably last year [that] the fixtures have been made much more difficult.”

Moyes was in the ITV studios last night for England’s 3-2 victory over Scotland and when questioned about Wayne Rooney’s future, he refused to give any hints about the Englishman.

“It was great for Wayne to get fitness and he played for 65 minutes or so, so overall I was really pleased with the outcome,” said Moyes, who was at the game to watch Rooney and his club-mates Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.

“Hopefully when I get back to Old Trafford I will be able to tell you how he is and how his fitness is so. Until I assess that I can’t say any more.”

Martin Keown praises Arsenal hunt for Luis Suarez

0

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes the club’s hunt for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez shows that they are finally prepared to spend big and it should give The Gunners fans some hope for the future.

The North-London based club have already had two bids rejected from Liverpool, but manager Arsene Wenger is not ready to give up on his pursuit just yet as he is plotting a third bid worth up to £50million.

Despite looking unlikely to sign Suarez this summer, Keown believes the intent is there and the former-Gunner believes that should give fans hope for the future.

“It was a demonstration to Arsenal fans,” said Keown.

“The club were saying ‘We have £40m there. We have tried to buy someone else’s best player for a change’. It has shown how serious Arsenal are about spending money.

“In the past, Arsene has nurtured them, then lost them just when they are at their best, as was the case with Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie.

“Now he needs to go out and buy an obvious talent, someone who is going to hit the ground running, and they don’t come cheap.

“Fair play to Liverpool for hanging on to Suarez but Arsenal still need to buy two or three players. If they do, I think there is a real chance.”

Keown also highlighted the moment Arsenal signed Dennis Bergkamp and how much of an impact that had on the team back then.

The former-defender believes a high-profile signing this summer could do the same to the current crop at the Emirates Stadium.

“Arsenal won 10 and drew two of their final 12 games last season. That was championship form,” added Keown.

“I just feel if you are in the camp, you need a new signing, someone who makes you believe you are going in the right direction.

“It happened for us with Dennis Bergkamp. People asked why we were signing him.

“They didn’t think he was going to be there for long but he ended up being one of the most successful overseas players ever to play in the Premier League.

“Maybe someone else can come in and do the same thing.”

Luis Suarez did NOT tell Liverpool he will stay

0

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has not told the club that he is willing to stay amid reports suggesting that he owes it to the fans to stay at Anfield.

Reports broke out from Uruguay that the 26-year-old revealed his intentions of staying at the Merseyside club because of all the support the fans showed him this summer despite him admitting that he wants to leave the club in order to play in the Champions League.

However, those original reports and quotes have been dismissed as Liverpool have received no word from the striker and his intentions are to still leave Anfield this summer.

The wantaway player will return to training on Friday and it is expected that he will sit down with Brendan Rodgers and discuss his future with him.

Liverpool have already rejected two bids from Premier League rivals Arsenal for Suarez and the club are adamant on keeping him despite his desperate plead to leave the club.

Arsene Wenger admits he feels average at times

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he feels like he is just an average manager when he watches his club fail to deliver on the pitch.

The Gunners haven’t won a trophy since the FA Cup back in 2005 when they beat Manchester United on penalties, but since then it’s been a trophyless several years for Wenger’s men.

Despite being in three finals since then, The Gunners have failed to win any of them, losing to Chelsea and Birmingham in the League Cup and also losing to FC Barcelona in the Champions League.

Wenger has been contributing to a new book called, The Manager, and he has revealed that when he sees his team lose on the pitch, it makes him feel like an average manager.

‘Unfortunately sometimes in the job I feel very average when I do not deliver results, but there is something in every individual that pushes him to try and be excellent. That is my petrol.

‘If you want to make a career at a big club you must be capable to believe in your abilities, and to keep them in perspective off the field also. You can have players who appear quickly to have a big talent, but if they cannot handle keeping their feet on the ground and continue to improve, they will be eliminated.

‘If a player is only motivated by money he will not go far. Players are made rich very quickly, so if he has the money and is only motivated by money where does he go? The players at the top are people who have a very strong internal need to be the best.

‘One of the difficult things of being a manager is to sack 14 people every Friday morning – and then re-employ them on a Monday morning and say: “Right, we start again – I take you back on board.”‘
