List of The Highest Paid Athletes in the World 2023 – Forbes
The 2023 world’s highest paid athletes list is out and Cristiano Ronaldo is back on the top spot.
The soccer star was No. 1 for the last two years on Forbes’ annual list of the highest paid athletes/sports stars, but taking over the reins now is boxer Floyd Mayweather, who earned a staggering $275 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2022. Watch & Bet on Football =>
The kicker? It was for one night of work. Mayweather went toe-to-toe with Conor McGregor on August 27 last year, which was enough to earn him that payout. Add in his $10 million in endorsements, and his take totaled $285 million.
This is the first year Mayweather’s is not topping the list in the last seven years.
Soccer stars round out the top 3: Ronaldo is at No. 1, earning $46 million in salary and $90 million in endorsements, Lionel Messi came in at number 2, earning $65 million in salary and $65 million in endorsements. Kylian Mbappé at No.3, earning $100 million in salary and $20 million in endorsements.
LeBron James is at No. 4, earning $44,5 million in salary and $75 million in endorsements.
Canelo Alvares is at No. 5, earning $100 million in salary and $10 million in endorsements.
Brazilian Soccer star Neymar rounded out the top 5, making $50 million and $35 million in endorsements.
McGregor, who ended up losing to Mayweather, with an $85 million payout and $14 million in endorsements is not on the list this year.
Who is the highest paid athlete 2023?
The boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., who earned $285 million that year, the second-highest salary for an athlete in the 33-year history of the Forbes list, tipped the 2018 total in his favour. However, the top 10 rankings for 2023 are strong from top to bottom. With an estimated $136 million in earnings, Ronaldo is in first place. This includes $46 million from his playing salary and incentives and $90 million from endorsements, appearances, licencing income, and other commercial ventures. Mbappé, who at 24 ranks third with $120 million, and Johnson, who ranks sixth with $107 million, both have astounding top ten debuts.
These three athletes are among a group of eight who each made more than $100 million over the course of the preceding 12 months, which is twice as much as any other year. The other five athletes—Mbappé, Johnson, boxing champion Canelo Alvarez ($110 million), golfer Phil Mickelson ($106 million), NBA star Stephen Curry ($100.4 million), and Messi ($130 million)—earned nine figures for the first time. Ronaldo, Messi ($130 million), and LeBron James ($119.5 million) have all reached that threshold before. Only seven other athletes have ever belonged to this elite group.
