Goalkeeper is training with the Blues
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed free agent Marco Amelia is currently training with the first-team.
The former-AC Milan goalkeeper has been on trial with the West London club for the past week or so, and after impressing officials at the club, he’s about to be offered a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Chelsea are a little short on keeping options with the injury sustained to Thibaut Courtois, leaving them with just Asmir Begovic and Jamal Blackman.
Several ‘keepers had been mentioned with possible moves taking place in the New Year, but Mourinho has insisted the club need an option now in order to cover for Courtois‘ absence.
When asked about Amelia in today’s press conference, Mourinho confirmed the veteran was training with the squad.
Amelia In Training
He said: “Yes, we try.
“We have at the moment Marco Amelia with us, working with us for a couple of days. He’s an experienced goalkeeper, he knows what a big club is.
“He knows the responsibility of playing in the Champions League, his national team.
“The last couple of years he didn’t play so much and hasn’t trained with a team for a few months, but what you need is some cover and stability until Courtois is back.
“Maybe he’s the guy to give us that.”
