Zanetti retires

0

Inter Milan legend Javier Zanetti has finally hung up his boots, after a superb career at the San Siro.

The veteran club stalwart ended a 20 year playing career and was an unused substitute in the derby defeat to AC Milan.

feel that now is the right time to do it,” he told La Nacion after Inter’s defeat in the Milan derby, where he was an unused substitute, much to the annoyance of Inter’s fans. “Football has given me so much and I have enjoyed every moment. Because after the achilles injury last April, I wanted to demonstrate that I could return and be competitive, but I could not.

“I feel complete and have realised that to retire at 40 is a priceless feeling. For me it is something that has immense value, and now is the right time. Do I fear life after this? No, there is no fear.”

Zanetti is set to stay at the club, as owner Erik Thohir builds for the future.

Brendan Rodgers to receive £60m transfer budget

0

After Brendan Rodgers said “”bye bye”” to the title, he knows he must buy and buy.

And top of his shopping list will be defenders as he overhauls Liverpool’s deficient defence.

Liverpool’s leaky backline has shipped 49 goals this season, and no side have ever conceded that many goals and won the Premier League.

Compare Liverpool’s goals against tally to City’s figure of 37 and that is why the title is heading back to the Etihad.

Rodgers knows this and he vowed to strengthen their defence in the immediate aftermath of the Reds’ fatal capitulation at Crystal Palace, when they conceded three times in the last 11 minutes to draw 3-3.

“We just didn’t defend well enough,” said the Liverpool boss. “It’s an area that we know we need to be better at. We’ve improved a lot in many aspects of our game and that will be an area I’m sure we’ll look at – and nobody more so than myself.”

Rodgers will be given £60million to spend this summer and he wants at least one new centre-half and a left-back.

He remains interested in Schalke’s Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos and is tracking Cardiff’s Steven Caulker, whom he had on loan while manager at Swansea.

Rodgers will also have Portuguese defender Tiago Ilori back and he has impressed during his loan spell at Granada.

He will consider offers for vice-captain Daniel Agger, who has spent the last few weeks on the bench, and will look to offload Sebastian Coates back to his native Uruguay.

Rodgers does not rate either Jose Enrique or Aly Cissokho, who will be returned to Valencia, and his chief scout Barry Hunter has been watching Sporting Lisbon’s Argentina left-back Marcos Rojo.

The Irishman wants to make at least six quality signings to bolster his squad for Liverpool’s return to the Champions League.

Atletico to ask Costa to delay move by a year

0

Atletico Madrid are set to ask their striker Diego Costa to delay his move to Chelsea until the summer of 2015.

The West London club had presumably tied up a deal to bring the highly rated striker in to the club this summer.

However in a swift turn of events, Atletico boss Diego Simeone has pleaded with his star studded centre forward to delay his pending move to Madrid until the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

Simeone’s plan is to keep Costa for another year, to build upon the squad.

The Spain international has been in red hot formfor his club this season, scoring 26 La Liga goals, and helping Madrid to a Champions League final.

Arsenal star agrees five-year deal

0

According to reports, Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has signed a contract extension at the club which will see him remain there until 2019.

The French centre-back has been superb for The Gunners this season, and his partnership with Per Mertesacker has been one of the strongest defensive duos in England, but with his consistent performances, came more attraction from big European clubs.

Last Summer, both Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona were interested in signing the 28-year-old, and there were reports suggesting that they would renew their interest this Summer, but reports from France are claiming that the defender has already committed his future to the North-London club.

The new five-year deal will see Koscielny be the fourth first-team player to commit his future to the club after; Per Mertesacker, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky all penned new deals earlier on in the season.

This will provide some good news for Arsenal, especially after it was revealed that Bacary Sagna will be leaving the club.

Arsene Wenger: ‘I had Hazard’s agent at my house’

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he held talks with Eden Hazard’s agent at his own home, before rivals Chelsea launched a staggering bid to sign the Belgium international from French side Lille.

Speaking in a recent interview, Wenger admitted that he was holding talks with the agent before a £32million bid was made from Roman Abramovich and Chelsea, which eventually was enough for the club to sign the 21-year-old.

It was back in 2012 when Hazard was wanted by several European giants, but he made it clear that his next move would be to England and the Premier League, which meant Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all in the driving seat.

However, it was Wenger who managed to get a meeting with the player’s agent and according to the Frenchman, things were going well until Chelsea threw their cheque book on the table.

‘Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn’t make.

‘He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well.’

“I am not good enough for Arsenal”, says Bender

0

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender has admitted that he doesn’t think he is good enough just yet to join a side like Arsenal.

The Premier League giants are keen to sign a new holding-midfielder with fears that Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are nearing the end of their careers, and the Leverkusen-man was Arsene Wenger’s number-one option.

However, it was revealed yesterday that the German international was happy to remain in Germany and wanted to see out the rest of his contract in the Bundesliga, and today, Bender has admitted that he doesn’t think he’s good enough to play for Wenger’s side.

He said: ‘I signed my new contract until 2019, and that should have told everyone how happy I am at Leverkusen.

‘I feel settled here and see no reason to change anything.

‘In fact, if I am to be completely honest, I haven’t had a brilliant season and don’t feel ready yet to take on a pivotal role at a big club somewhere else.

‘I need to keep working on my game, and I am going to do that here at Leverkusen. That suits me, and I am happy with that.’

It was reported that Wenger was ready to spend up to £20million on the 25-year-old.

Bacary Sagna wants Premier League stay…..

0

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna is keen to remain in the Premier League after this season, but does not want to stay on at the Emirates Stadium after he feels ‘disrespected’ by the club.

The French international is not happy with how the club’s officials have dealt with the contract talks between the two, and the 31-year-old has now rejected a third offer from the club due to the talks dragging on since Christmas.

Arsenal have offered Sagna an extension three times now, but on all three occasions, their offer has been declined by the right-back due to there either being no pay-rise, or the duration of the contract not being long enough.

Despite wanting to leave The Gunners this Summer, Sagna is not keen on leaving England which could open the door to him switching to fierce rivals Manchester City or Chelsea.

A source close to Sagna revealed last month: “He will leave the club 100 per cent – there is no way he will stay.

“He feels very heartbroken, disgusted and disrespected by the board and the offers they are making, after being so loyal to the club for so many years.

“Now his focus will be to help his team-mates and the fans by landing the FA Cup and a top four finish.”

Sagna is believed to have wanted around £100k-a-week, but was only offered £75k.

Real Madrid ready to bid for Suarez

0

Real Madrid are preparing a whopping £70 million summer transfer fee for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The Reds could possibly face the prospect of yet another summer transfer sage involving their maverick striker, who has been superb for Liverpool this year, having scored 27 Premier League goals, as Liverpool pushed for the title.

And Suarez’ goal scoring exploits could possibly see the Champions League finalists table a bid in the near future, with reports that Karim Benzema maty leave the club.

The Uruguay international may find a move to Spain to hard to turn down, with Liverpool faultering in the title race, following a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace.

The move will see Madrid form a deadly trio of with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale partnering Suarez.

Suarez could become the third highest transfer in history, behind Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and Gareth Bale.

It is also thought the La Liga giants have turned to Suarez as a replacement option for Sergio Aguero, who has somewhat struggled with injuries for Manchester City this term.

Brendan Rodgers to sign new contract this week and commit for next four years

0

Brendan Rodgers has agreed a new Liverpool contract – and could put pen to paper before the end of the week.

It is understood the Northern Irishman has shaken hands on a four-season extension to his current £2.5million-a year contract, which will also net him an attractive pay rise and make him one of the highest-earning managers in the Premier League.

But it is the opportunity to build for the long term that attracts Rodgers, who has suddenly come onto the radar of Europe’s wealthiest clubs following a successful second season in charge of the Anfield giants.

Barcelona seem likely to be looking for a new boss in the summer, and reports from Spain suggest Rodgers’ name has come up at board level.

But Liverpool owners have moved swiftly to ensure their manager’s future is secured with the new deal.

It will provide a tonic for the club’s support after the disappointment and shock of the capitulation at Crystal Palace on Monday evening, when the Reds shipped three goals in a crazy last 10 minutes, to see their title hopes dealt a devastating blow.

Liverpool will still cling on to the hope that rivals Manchester City will drop points in their remaining two matches, but the message from the club is that this season – however, thrilling for the fans – is merely the start of a long-term plan, with Rodgers given time and money to leave a lasting legacy.

A fortnight ago, MD Ian Ayre unveiled plans to redevelop and expand Anfield and the first phase of that major build could be completed by the summer of 2016.

The club has also announced impressive commercial results, and hope to be in a strong financial position, especially with the introduction of financial fair-play rules, to challenge the richest clubs in Europe in the medium and long term.

They see a new contract for the manager as central to that. There are also plans to reward some of their most impressive performers this season, including skipper Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel and John Flanagan, with new deals too in the summer.

With the manager and most of the best young players secured on long-term deals – as well as star forward Luis Suarez and his strike partner Daniel Sturridge – owners John Henry and Tom Werner believe they will have a solid foundation for future success, even if Liverpool suffer huge disappointment at the end of a dramatic season.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Rodgers offered an insight into his relationship with the owners, when he insisted they had given him an incredible platform to build on.

“I would like to thank the owners and the executive team for what they have done for me since I have been here,” he said. “They gave me, a young guy of 39 years old, the chance to develop the vision of football that I have.

“If they didn’t have faith in me, I wouldn’t be here because that is what modern football is like.”

Mourinho to convince Raphael Varane to join Chelsea

0

Jose Mourinho believes he can convince Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane to join him at Chelsea. This time last year the Frenchman had managed to replace Pepe in Madrid’s starting eleven and it appeared he had nabbed a first team place at the club.

But a year is a long time in football and after an injury last May that kept him out of action for a considerable amount of time, he has now lost his starting place to Pepe again. He managed to start a few games for the Galacticos at the beginning of this year but since then, chances have been scarce.

Now, stories are beginning to surface that Varane may want out of the Spanish club. Marca originally claimed that Mourinho was keeping a close eye on the situation and now El Confidencial is reporting that the Chelsea boss could be set to offer Varane an escape route to Stamford Bridge, where he is seen as John Terry’s successor.

At 21, the young defender still has a lot to prove, but the Chelsea manager believes the potential is there for Varane to become as good, if not better, than Terry. That belief was backed up by the defender’s performances in big games for Madrid last season.

However, Real will not be too keen to let the youngster go, but with Chelsea vying for his signature and the lack of game time at Madrid, Varane may have other ideas about his future.

Glen Johnson hits back at ‘sofa experts’

0

Glen Johnson has reacted angrily to criticism of his defending after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace. The Reds were three goals in front but they let that lead slip and came away with only a draw.

That result all but ends the club’s title hopes and it left Luis Suarez in tears at the final whistle. Glen Johnson on the other hand, was in a much angrier mood. In tweets last night he hit out at fans who criticised his performance by saying:

“Absolutely clueless…” and then “So many sofa experts in this game…Absolutely no idea about football whatsoever! #Jokers”

The right-back began to receive a stream of messages online straight after his side conceded the three goals in eleven minutes. He was also critiscised by Anfield legend Robbie Fowler on Match Of The Day, who claimed:

“He looked shattered after being fantastic going forward all game but he has to better defensively.”

With that draw it appears Liverpool’s Premier League glory hopes may be over. Despite the club being on top of the table City, who are sat in second, have a game in hand.

Arsenal after Gotze.

0

Arsene Wenger will attempt to bring Mario Gotze to the Emirates in the summer.

The Bayern Munich winger is considering his future options, after stating his “displeasure” about how things have gone at the Allianz Arena.

The German international joined Bayern Munich from Dortmund for £32 million fee, however he has failed to make his mark upon the squad.

Gotze has scored 15 times since his move, but stated to German media.

“Of course I am not happy (with first-team action),” Gotze said. “But I will continue to work hard and fight for a place in the first XI. “I hope I am able to regain the trust of the manager and play regularly from the start.”

This has alerted Arsene Wenger, who is set to table a bid in the coming weeks.

Young stars handed debuts

0

Interim manager, Ryan Giggs, has handed future stars, Tom Lawrence and James Wilson their dream debuts at Old Trafford tonight.

Both youngsters have caught the eye this year, after very impressive displays in the reserve team. Both players seem to have a bright future and have both been earning their way through the ranks at Manchester United.

Wilson in particular has impressed many at the United academy, forcing former boss, David Moyes, to place the youngster on the bench vs Newcastle a couple of weeks ago. Wilson has scored 19 goals this term in the reserves and was eagerly anticipated at the prospect of making a full debut for the first team.

“Hopefully it [my debut] is not too far off,” he admitted. “It would be great and it’s what you work towards. Every time, I just think: ‘I could be in that first team’. “It would be great to get a few minutes on the pitch and a real experience to see how different the games are and the pace of it. I need to see how I deal with the atmosphere, the pressure and other factors.” It seems that Ryan Giggs has acted upon this and allowed the player his first full debut for the club tonight.

Lawrence, on the other hand, has been at United since he was eight, progressing through the age-groups in the Reds’ Academy and being part of the 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning squad.

Unfortunately, his final season at Academy level proved to be an injury-ravaged affair. Despite starting the campaign in splendid form, the lengthy absence ensured he missed the bulk of the action before returning towards the end of the season.

A brace in the last game, against Stoke City at Carrington, saw him finish on seven goals in only eight starts and Reserves boss Warren Joyce admitted he would have been an option for promotion into his plans had it not been for the injury.

Lawrence is expected to line up behind Wilson tonight, and both will be looking to catch the eye of many in the Old Trafford crowd. They both will hopefully be handed opportunities like fellow team-mate Adnan Januzaj and potentially further their careers in the coming years.

Ryan Giggs has named himself on the bench tonight, alongside Nemanja Vidic, whos long serving run at Manchester United will come to an end, as the player will leave for Inter Milan at the end of the season.

Terry set for Chelsea exit!

0

Chelsea captain John Terry could have played his last game for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Chelsea fans chanting his name as the skipper led the lap of appreciation on Sunday, contract talks have broken down according to reports

Terry is not willing to accept a massive pay cut – his £175,000 weekly salary could be halved in a 12-month deal.

The blues captain has mentioned he wants to stay at the club he has been playing for since he was 15, and who has lead throughout the greatest period of Chelsea’s history.

However after an outstanding season for the club, he believes he deserves a better deal and unless they can reach a deal, Terry may have said his final goodbye on Sunday.
