GARTH CROOKS’ TEAM OF THE WEEK

0

After a weekend of excitement, drama and awful referee decisions, BBC pundit Garth Crooks put together his best starting XI, and here is who made the cut this weekend!

GOALKEEPER – SIMON MIGNOLET (Liverpool)

Mignolet was beaten on three occasions, but also denied Romelu Lukaku a hat-trick and Everton a certain victory with the Belgium goalkeeper at the top of his game. Regular readers of my Team of the Week will know that I seldom select goalkeepers who let in so many goals, but he was superb.

DEFENDER – CESAR AZPILICUETA (Chelsea)

Deployed at left-back, Azpilicueta just never stopped breaking forward as part of Chelsea’s overwhelming wave of sustained attacks. At times it was like the Charge of the Light Brigade. In the end West Ham had no answer to Chelsea’s onslaught and the Spaniard played his part. Ashley Cole may not just have Leighton Baines to worry about; I think Chelsea might have a very worthy left-back in Azpilicueta. The fact that I picked him on the right is because I’ve selected Kieran Gibbs on the left.

DEFENDER – PER MERTESACKER (Arsenal)

What a week Mertesacker had. He scored the winner against England in midweek and was outstanding again against Southampton. Why anyone thought for a moment that Saints defender Jose Fonte didn’t pull the Germany captain’s shirt, resulting in a penalty, is a mystery to me. And what exactly was Artur Boruc doing auditioning for Strictly Come Dancing in the 22nd minute? Two separate moments of madness resulting in the downfall of Southampton. Mertesacker remained completely unmoved by both incidents.

DEFENDER – DANNY GABBIDON (Crystal Palace)

What a send off for Eagles caretaker manager Keith Millen. Tony Pulis might be taking over but Millen has at least left the new manager with a team growing in confidence and with some momentum. At the heart of that growing confidence is Danny Gabbidon, who was unfussy and pragmatic in Palace’s victory over Hull City Tigers or whatever they call themselves these days.

DEFENDER – KIERAN GIBBS (Arsenal)

The battle between Nathaniel Clyne and Kieran Gibbs down Arsenal’s left-hand side was a fascinating contest between these two young English defenders with bright international futures. I think Gibbs won the contest and Arsenal definitely won the points.

MIDFIELDER – STEVEN NZONZI (Stoke)

Made one goal and scored the other. A player more renowned for his work rate than his goalscoring prowess. But even the Frenchman couldn’t disguise his surprise when referee Kevin Friend sent off Wes Brown for what appeared to be a perfectly reasonable tackle. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was so incensed he couldn’t keep his coat on.

MIDFIELDER – OSCAR (Chelsea)

Jose Mourinho has practically ignored Juan Mata this season, rubbished the apology afforded to West Brom manager Steve Clarke by Mike Riley and, according to Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, the ‘special one’ has lost the charm that endeared him to Spanish football. But one thing he has got absolutely right is the consistent selection of Oscar. The Brazilian produced another brilliant performance against West Ham and once again totally justified Mourinho’s selection.

MIDFIELDER – FRANK LAMPARD (Chelsea)

It’s normally very difficult to go back to your old club and perform well – but not for Frank Lampard, it seems. His goalscoring record against West Ham is quite remarkable. The more the fans at Upton Park single Lampard out for special attention the more he seems to score against them. You’d have thought they would have learned their lesson by now.

FORWARD – SERGIO AGUERO (Manchester City)

I have received text messages from all over the world about the completely abject performance by Tottenham against Man City. The tragedy was the sheer lack of effort, but not even the most ardent Spurs fan could deny the supreme performance of Sergio Aguero. This guy is world class.

FORWARD – FRAIZER CAMPBELL (Cardiff)

Glenn Hoddle and Graeme Souness think Campbell might find himself on the plane to Rio with the rest of the England contingent if he continues to produce impressive performances like the one against Manchester United. What’s taken them so long to come to that conclusion? The vast majority of us thought it was possible after his performance against Manchester City earlier in the season.

FORWARD – ROMELU LUKAKU (Everton)

In a game that seemed to have a bit of everything, Lukaku’s header for his second goal reminded me of Everton legend Bob Latchford at his best. His movement towards the near post followed by his bullet header suggests to me that Jose Mourinho has dropped a major clanger by letting the Belgium international leave Chelsea for Goodison, albeit on loan. This young man has a lot more to offer.

Wayne Rooney comments on his kick-out at Jordon Mutch

0

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has taken to Twitter to give his opinion on the incident that took place during their clash with Cardiff City yesterday evening.

In the first-half, with the game at 0-0, Rooney lashed out at Cardiff player, Jordon Mutch, and kicked him in the back of his leg, much like the striker did for England against Montenegro just before Euro 2012.

On that occasion, the 28-year-old received a straight red, but this time, he was only given a yellow card and after the game, he took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the incident.

“Just watched game back. I agree mine was bad tackle and ref dealt with it,” Rooney tweeted.

Mignolet: SAS Deadly

0

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet did not think the Reds had thrown away the 221st Merseyside derby when they were trailing due to the firepower of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Having twice led through Philippe Coutinho and a brilliant Luis Suarez free-kick – either side of Kevin Mirallas’ equaliser – Romelu Lukaku scored twice to give the Toffees a 3-2 lead with eight minutes to go.

Mignolet’s Belgium team-mate appeared to have delivered a crushing blow only for Sturridge to snatch back a point in the 89th minute.

“I have to be honest once they scored at 3-2 you think you are losing the game but looking back we are always there scoring goals,” he said.

“We always get a chance with Daniel and Luis and we know they have goals.

“Daniel scored the equaliser which was very important for us as it means we can keep going in the way we started this season and make sure we build on that.

“If we win next week this can be a very important point for us.”

Mignolet was Liverpool’s best player with a string of saves in the second half as Everton pushed, initially, for their equaliser.

However, even he could not prevent the Reds’ weakness at set-pieces being exploited as with the first coming from a free-kick and the third a corner.

“As a goalkeeper you don’t want to be busy. You like it in training but you have to do the things you are asked and do the best you can,” he added.

“It is not nice to concede from set-pieces but we also scored from set-pieces (all three goals).

“We have to make sure we do things better in the next few games.

“But Romelu is a physical presence and sometimes you have to give credit to the attacker as well.”

Aside from the overall action in the game the major talking point was Mirallas’ knee-high challenge on Suarez which left the Uruguay striker limping heavily for 10 minutes before half-time.

The 26-year-old was still limping when he left Goodison Park but the tackle which manager Brendan Rodgers described as potentially career-ending was not enough to prevent him completing 90 minutes and almost snatching victory when his superb effort in added time was batted away by goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Suarez, after a 7,000-mile trip from his homeland following a World Cup qualifying play-off on Wednesday, was floored for some time by Mirallas’ challenge – which referee Phil Dowd decided was worthy only of a booking.

Rodgers admitted he feared the worst.

“You don’t see him do that. Sometimes he rolls about but then gets up quickly but I knew it was reasonably bad when he stayed down that long,” said the Reds boss.

“I don’t think there are many (who could play on). His will and determination to play is unbelievable.

“He is just remarkable. He got back late Thursday night and looked surprisingly fresh in Friday’s training.

“Having only one striker for six months last year gave me an idea of what his mentality is like and I know even if he is not playing well at the end of the game he can still get you something and he nearly did.

“He is a player who goes to the limit every game so I have no doubts.”

Despite his disappointment at conceding three goals Rodgers was pleased with his team’s battling qualities as they picked themselves up to get a draw.

“When you come off after a game like that against your rivals and play like we did in parts of the game and show the character and mentality to come from behind it tells me everything about where my group is at,” he added.

“We are disappointed as well because we were 2-1 up and we should have gone 3-1 (when Joe Allen inexplicably missed the target with only the goalkeeper to beat), which would have allowed us to control the game.

“They ended up getting the equaliser and then we were not strong enough on a corner, Lukaku gets his header and it’s 3-2.

“In a game we should never have been behind in against our rivals we had to show our character and that is what we did.

“A point away from home against a rival is always a very good result but obviously we will look at it and think with a bit better control we could have won.”

Rio Ferdinand throws doubt into future!

0

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand isn’t certain whether or not he will continue playing football after this season ends.

The 35-year-old centre-back is out of contract this Summer and has admitted that no contract talks have taken place as of yet between himself and the team.

The United veteran has lost his place in the starting line-up due to the progression of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and he has now admitted that he has no clue where his future lies.

He said: ‘I don’t know what will happen. I’ve got to get through this season first. I hope I finish this one.

‘Last season I said the same thing. I won’t look any further than the end of the season and then re-evaluate it around that time.’

I will be back to my best soon, says Walcott

0

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes he will be soon back to his best in order to help the club push on in their pursuit for silverware, and he is also hopeful of earning a spot in next Summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Englishman made his return to action yesterday during the club’s 2-0 victory over his former-club Southampton.

Walcott, who hadn’t played since September after picking up a stomach injury, admitted after the game that it will take time for him to re-find top form, but he also feels confident that it won’t take him too long to get back into the swing of things.

‘It is a challenge I can face, I have faced some in my short career so far,’ said Walcott.

‘It is nothing new to me, I know how to deal with it all. I have some fantastic people around me and know how good I am.

‘It will take a couple of games, but I am sure I will be back to my best very soon.’

Walcott continued: ‘It has been longer than I thought, but it is so good to be back out on the pitch with the guys and playing in such a fantastic team.

‘Seeing the way we play football has been fairly pleasant to watch (from the sidelines), but any player who is injured wants to go out there and perform.

‘It is frustrating at times, but you have just got to think about getting back fit as soon as you can, and I am happy to be back now.’

Romelu Lukaku hails ‘best career experience’

0

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has admitted that taking part in a Merseyside Derby was the best moment of his club career.

The on-loan Belgium forward from Chelsea scored a brace for The Toffees against Liverpool yesterday in a thrilling encounter which ended all square at 3-3.

It came as a shock to many people when Jose Mourinho decided to send the forward out on loan yet again this season, especially after his heroics last year for West Bromwich Albion, but Mourinho’s loss is definitely Roberto Martinez’s game and Lukaku has admitted that Saturday was his best ever experience.

‘The best experience I ever had in club football,’ he told BT Sport.

‘To play in such a derby is a great honour and to score two goals is great but the pity is we didn’t win.

‘The manager said before the that game last week that we also had a lot of chances but we had to stay positive and keep on working.

‘That’s what we did today, we did our best, especially my team-mates helped me to score two goals.’

Aaron Ramsey proving doubters wrong

0

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey believes he is making all of his doubters look silly after being in the form of his life so far this season.

The Gunners have been superb so far this year and the Welshman has been at the heart of that, providing the team with goals left, right and centre, as well as setting up his team-mates as well.

Ramsey, who suffered a serious leg injury a few years back, has been heavily criticised by many footballing fans during his time at the Emirates Stadium, but this year, he has looked like a completely different player, and he has admitted that his doubters are looking pretty silly now.

‘People are quick to jump on players who are not doing particularly well,’ said Ramsey. ‘I think I proved a lot of people wrong, hopefully made them look a bit silly because they knew what I was capable of before my leg break and then were quick to criticise.’

‘If something like that does happen to another player they will realise the implications of the injury. Even though things maybe weren’t happening as I would shy away (no the pitch).

‘I tried things and would still do what I thought was right. The main thing is the manager and me believing in my ability.’

David Moyes left disappointed

0

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed his disappointment after seeing his side concede a 90th-minute equaliser against Cardiff City today.

Wayne Rooney had given the visitors the lead in the first-half, before Patrice Evra made it 2-1 just before half-time. This goal coming after Fraizer Campbell has brought the hosts level.

However, in the 90th-minute, a Kim Bo-Kyung header gave Cardiff a point and after the game, Moyes revealed his disappointment at conceding so late on.

“Disappointment that we didn’t take all three points, but Cardiff made a game of it and put us under pressure.

“We gave away a stupid free-kick which led to the [equalising] goal but we had one or two chances ourselves which could’ve put the game to bed earlier.”

Despite there being four-goals, it was a controversial Rooney moment that will be catching the headlines as he kicked-out at Jordan Mutch, only for the referee to give a yellow card rather than a red, but after the game, Moyes defended his player.

Moyes said: “There was a bit of a tussle but I don’t think it deserved any more than a yellow card.”

The 2-2 draw leaves United seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.

We were at our best, says Pellegrini

0

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has admitted that his side were un-playable and un-beatable today after they eased past rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

A brace from Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero were the highlights of the game, but a futher goal from Alvaro Negredo and a Sandro own-goal completed the rout as the hosts thrashed Spurs 6-0 earlier on today.

After the game, Andre Villas-Boas slammed his own side, but as for Pellegrini, he couldn’t hide his delight.

“We played really well,” said Pellegrini, whose side have won all six of their league matches at Etihad Stadium so far this season.

“We are working to have one style of playing and continue in the same way.”

“All my teams normally score a lot of goals. I cannot forget about Real Madrid, where we scored more than 100 goals in a season,” added the Chilean, who managed the Spanish side in the 2009-10 season.

“But here we have not only Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, who are both incredible players, we also have Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, who is injured.

“You cannot also forget about Fernandinho and Samir Nasri as they played really well against Tottenham.

“In this style the players are comfortable because they are creative players.”

We should be ashamed, says Spurs boss

0

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas believes his players should be ashamed after they were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City earlier on today at the Etihad Stadium.

To understand the game, you only had to watch the first 20-seconds as the hosts were already 1-0 up after calamitous defending from Spurs.

Jesus Navas grabbed a brace, as well as Sergio Aguero, whilst Alvaro Negredo and a Sandro own-goal added to the disappointment for Boas and after the game he revealed that the players should be ashamed of their peformance.

“We have to be ashamed of ourselves, and react to a defeat like this,” said Villas-Boas.

“It was a difficult start for us,” said Villas-Boas. “After that, everything you had in mind goes down the drain.

“There are not a lot of positives. We had a good spell of reaction after we suffered the early goals, but everything happened so quickly.

“Our only chance came in the first half. If it goes to 1-1 it is a different game.”

He added: “There is an immediate shock after 15 seconds.

“The concentration was not there, but the reaction of the players was positive. Everything went wrong for us, every opportunity was a goal and we paid a heavy price, too much for what we deserved.

“City were excellent, and we were extremely poor.”

Balotelli hints at exit

0

Mario Balotelli has sparked rumours he may be on his way out of the San Siro by tweeting ‘this is the end’ just hours after missing a penalty in AC Milan’s 1-1 draw with Genoa.

The controversial striker didn’t expand on the message. He tweeted at about 5am local time on his account @finallymario

However, six hours later he sent out another tweet in Italian which read: ‘Forza Milan comunque e sempre.’ Which translates as ‘Go on Milan, no matter how and forever’.

Italian newspaper Gezzetta dello Sport suggested that Balotelli could have been referring to a possible move in the January transfer window or that Milan’s coach, Massimilliano Alegri, could be on his way out.

Balotelli, who is famous for being an ace from the penalty spot, saw his kick saved by Mattia Perin in the 36th minute against Genoa. Balotelli famously wore a ‘Why always me?’ t-shirt during his days with Manchester City, which sparked a series of discussions about Balotelli.

Balotelli, it could be argued, was his own worst enemy during his spell in Manchester. Giving the press plenty of ammunition to take aim at the Italian.

He has been relatively quiet since joining Milan, bar his incident in the toilet of a train where he was caught smoking. He was also recently banned for three games for an angry outburst at a referee.

The pressure of playing for a struggling team appears to be showing its toll on Mario, having missed two penalties this season after being famous for a perfect record from the spot.

Milan have failed to win in their last seven games in all competitions and are 11th in Serie A. Milan are only five points ahead of Sampdoria in the relegation zone.

‘Balotelli’s missed penalty was the key,’ said chief executive Adriano Galliani. ‘If we had scored we would have won.

‘They didn’t have a shot on target all night and they definitely wouldn’t have had with us in the lead and with 10 men on the pitch.

‘We have to move forward now. The positive note was Kaka’s incredible performance. That’s life. It just goes like that sometimes.’

Kaka scored Milan’s first and only goal in the fourth minute.

‘We have to give something extra at the moment. There’s a lot of respect towards the fans and we definitely have to get out of this situation,’ said the phlegmatic coach.

‘We’re suffering a lot as a result of our league position and we have to get out of it soon. We’re all disappointed.’

‘There’s a lot of work to do and you need patience. The fans have to stay behind us and together we’ll get out of this situation.

‘Today Kaka played as an all-round midfielder. He adds value to everyone’s play. He’s a really great player and an incredible athlete for what he gives to the team.’

Pochettino backs Boruc.

0

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino had defended his goalkeeper Artur Boruc, after the Southampton goalkeeper made an awful mistake during his side’s 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

Boruc, who conceded a freak goal in the Saints 1-1 draw at Stoke City a few weeks ago, attempted to dribble the ball past in- form Arsenal man Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman seized the ball from Boruc’s feet, after a failed Cruyff turn, and tapped into the open goal to put the Gunners 1-0 up.

Pochettino stated to BBC Sport via his interpreter.

“It’s not really necessary to analyse what happened, we all saw it on the pitch,”

“We want to support our keeper in spite of this mistake, these things happen.”

The South Coast club came into the match in 3rd position in the League table, after a run of superb results, and just one defeat in their last nine League outings, the Saints also had a trio of England international’s in their ranks, with Ricly Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana all pulling on a three lions jersey, Lallana respectively impressing in both games.

But when Nathaniel Clyne played a routine back pass to the Polish shot stopper, who attempted a failed Cruyff turn, things went bad to worse.

Pochettino also added…..

“When it goes well we receive compliments, when it doesn’t – as today – we get negative comments. But that’s how we play and we want to continue because it brings us results.”

Southampton have a few tough games in the next few weeks, with games against Chelsea and Manchester City in the near future.

Several Premier League clubs interested in superstar striker

0

The Colombian front-man has been linked with a lot of European top clubs in recent months after fine fine form in front of goal for Porto, as he scored 34 times in 43 appearances last term.

Chelsea have perhaps shown the most interest from England, though Arsenal and Liverpool have also been monitoring him lately.

Although City don’t lack quality options upfront at present, there are some doubts over the futures of Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero, and Manuel Pellegrini believes Martinez could be a useful addition to his squad, according to Sports Direct News.
