10. F.C Basel is one of the best Portuguese teams to never win the Champions League (Portugal)

Having made it to the current format of the Champions League eight times, with the first coming in 2002-03, Basel have impressed many with their flair football, but they are yet to win the tournament.

During their eight seasons in the Champions League, Basel have stunned English giants; Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool amongst other big guns.

9. Zenit St. Petersburg is one of the best Russian teams to never win the Champions League

Zenit St. Petersburg represent Russia in the Champions League as they have rose to prominence in Europe over the past few years.

Their first Champions League appearance came way-back in 2008-09 though they crashed out in group stages as they were drawn up against giants Real Madrid and Juventus.

Zenit‘s best performance has come when they have reached the round of 16  which was in 2012 and 2013 but ended up losing to Borussia Dortmund and Benfica respectively.

They have qualified for the Champions League nine times since 1992-93 when it was changed from The UEFA Cup Winners Cup.

Their best performance came when they managed to reach the quarter-finals in 2010-11, but their journey ended after losing to F.C Barcelona.

The Ukrainian big guns have never made it to the finals of the UEFA Champions League and the last game they played in the 2014-15 season’s Champions League ended in a heavy defeat againt Bayern Munich, losing 7-0 at the Allianz Arena.

A few seasons ago saw PSG eliminated by Chelsea but this year they managed to get their revenge as they eliminated Chelsea’s then boss Jose Mourinho’s men due to the away goals rule. However, they were knocked out the round later by a rampant Barcelona side.

They have repeatedly been thwarted by sides despite having been one of the tournament favourites.

5. Schalke 04 one of the best German teams to have failed to win the Champions League (Germany)

They might not be in the same calibre with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga, but Schalke 04 have made it to the Champions League several times.

The closest Schalke have reached is the semi finals, but they lost 6-1 on aggregate to Manchester United during the 2010/11 season.

The 2014-15 season saw Schalke almost reached the quarter finals of the Champions League but just fall short at the Bernabeau.

They beat Real Madrid 4-3 in Spain but lost 5-4 on aggregate.

Lyon had previously made three consecutive quarter-final appearances from 2003-04 to 2005-06.

3. Valencia is one of the best Spanish teams that never won a Champions League (Spain)

Valencia have made it to the Champions League nine times since 1992-93 reaching to two successive Champions League Finals but losing both of them.

The first one came in 1999-2000 losing 3-0 against domestic league rivals Real Madrid, and then again lost in final the next season to German giants Bayern Munich on penalties in San Siro, Milan.

2. Atletico Madrid is one of the best teams to never win the Champions League (Spain)

Second on the list of best teams to never win the Champions League is Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish giants have been superb in recent seasons and the 2013/2014 campaign will also be a memorable one for Diego Simeone’s men.

After winning the La Liga, Simeone’s side then entered the Champions League final and were just seconds away from lifting the trophy. Atletico were beating local-rivals Real Madrid 1-0 but a Sergio Ramos header in stoppage time sent the game into extra-time.

The extra 30-minutes were too much for Atletico and they eventually lost 4-1.

Arsenal have always struggled to make a name for themselves in Europe despite having world-class squads along the years.

The Gunners’ best campaign in Europe came in 2006 when they reached the final but were beaten by FC Barcelona 2-1 after going 1-0 up thanks to a Sol Campbell header.

Arsenal played the majority of that game with 10-men after Jens Lehmann was sent off early on.
