After a gripping weekend of Premier League football, attention turns back to continental affairs for one last time in 2024 for the Europa League Knockout stage draw.
Liverpool were the only English side to finish top of their group and qualify to the knockout stage and Round of 16.

The Europa League ‘League Phase’ draw will take place on Friday 29 August 2025.
The draw for the UEFA Europa League League Phase round takes place at 11AM GMT, with Europe’s top teams to learn who they’ll face first in the group stage.
When is the Europa League Knockout playoff draw for the Round of 16?
The Europa League Knockout playoff draw will take place on Friday 30 January 2026.

What time is the Europa League draw?
The draw time for the UEFA Europa League takes place at 12:00 CET, 11:00pm UK time (GMT), with Europe’s top teams to learn who they’ll face first in the group and knockout stage.

How does the Europa League draw work?
In the Round of 16 teams cannot face opposition from the same national association and teams they previously came up against in the group stage. This means there are seedings and country protection in the Round of 16.
In the Quarter and Semi Final teams can face opposition from the same national association and teams they previously came up against in the group stage. This means there are no seedings and country protection in the Quarter and Semi Finals.
For the Quarter Final draw, eight balls containing the names of the Quarter Finalists are placed in a large central bowl and shuffled. The first team drawn plays its first match at home, against the second team drawn.
For the Semi Final draw, four balls containing slips of paper marked ‘Winners of quarter-final 1’ to ‘Winners of quarter-final 4’ are placed in a large central bowl and shuffled.
The first and second balls drawn determine the first Semi Final pairing, the first ball drawn representing the home team for the first leg.

UEFA Europa League draw rules
The traditional group stage has been replaced by a league phase, with each team playing 8 matches against 8 different opponents. Top eight teams will qualify for the knockout round and next 16 teams will play knockout playoffs to reach round of 16.
The first seed always comprises the Champions League titleholder, the UEFA Europa League titleholder and the six best domestic champions as ranked by UEFA.

UEFA Europa League Round of 16 draw rules
There are several Europa League draw rules that UEFA must follow in the first knockout draw – the Round of 16.
Teams from the same national federation can not play one another in the Round of 16. For example, Liverpool can not play Aston Villa in the Round of 16 because they both play in the Premier League. Liverpool and Aston Villa can play one another in the quarter-finals.
