How Does the Champions League Knockout Play-Off Work?
Under the new Champions League format, the top eight teams from the league phase automatically progress to the round of 16. However, those finishing between 9th and 24th must battle it out in a two-legged knockout play-off to secure their spot in the next round.
From this stage onward, the tournament follows a bracket system. The teams that finished 9th to 16th in the league phase are seeded and will face an unseeded team that finished 17th to 24th.
The seeded teams will also have the advantage of playing the second leg at home. Pre-determined pairings ensure that the draw maintains competitive balance.
