10. Joey Barton – six matches

Joey Barton received a six-match ban and a £150,000 fine from the Premier League, after a training ground fight with former Manchester City teammate Ousmane Dabo.

9. David Batty – six matches

David Batty received a six-game ban for pushing referee David Elleray during a match between Newcastle United and his former club Blackburn Rovers.

8. Luis Suarez – eight matches

When playing for Liverpool, striker Luis Suarez received an eight-game ban for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

7. Ben Thatcher – nine matches

Manchester City left-back Ben Thatcher was handed a nine-game ban and a £120,000 fine for viciously elbowing Portsmouth’s Pedro Mendes in the jaw.

6. Luis Suarez – ten matches

Suarez was handed a ten-game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm. This was Suarez’s second long-term ban as a Liverpool player.

Southampton midfielder David Prutton was handed a 10-game ban after pushing referee Alan Wiley in the chest. Wiley had taken advice off his assistant to send Prutton off for a dangerous tackle against Arsenal.

4. Paolo Di Canio – 11 matches

Sheffield Wednesday striker Paolo Di Canio was handed an 11-game ban and a £10,000 fine after shoving referee Paul Alcock to the ground. Like Prutton, Di Canio was reacting to a red card he had received when playing against Arsenal.

3. Joey Barton – 12 matches

Barton received a 12-game ban after multiple incidents in a game between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers; the midfielder was playing for QPR at the time. He has served the third longest player bans in English football. Barton is known to be a highly controversial figure and has been in jail before too for assault.

He traded handbags with Carlos Tevez, kneed Sergio Aguero and squared up with Mario Balotelli. Barton ultimately saw red for his offences.

2. Rio Ferdinand – eight months

Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand was handed an eight-month ban and a £50,000 fine by the Football Association (FA), after he missed a drugs test. He claimed he was ‘shopping’ at the time but the FA didn’t buy it and decided to ban him anyway earning him the second spot on the longest player bans in English football list.

1. Eric Cantona – nine months

Number 1 on our list of longest player bans in English football is Manchester United striker Eric Cantona was handed a nine-month ban and a compiled £30,000 fine, after he ‘kung-fu’ kicked a Crystal Palace fan at Selhurst Park.

Cantona was sent off during the game and proceeded to attack the fan as he left the pitch.

The Eagles’ supporter, Matthew Simmons, allegedly used racially aggravated language towards Cantona throughout the game.
